Hi,
I made the stupid mistake of setting the -nogui flag in the command-line input box from the PD menu and now when I launch PD, nothing appears. I thought it would still have the main interface, but no patch windows :( .
I've tried reinstalling but the setting remained. Which file do I need to edit to remove the -nogui from the startup options?
I'm running a fairly new version (the extended version with all the packages) on Win98.
Can anyone please help?

you need to edit the registry. try RegEdit.exe, from the Run option in the STart menu..

Many thanks. I'll try regedit, although I'm a bit in the dark about it. I guess the best method is to uninstall PD first and then search out any remaining PD entries and remove them?

Thanks for the advice re regedit - it worked fine.
Presumably, if you want to run -nogui in Windows you should only do it as a command-line parameter when launching PD from the command-line. It would be nice if the flag could be deactivated somehow.

As of 0.40 you can run "pd -noprefs" (from the command line or using a shortcut) to get Pd running without preferences. There are probably several other things you can do in the preferences that will break Pd badly enough that you will have to do this. One example is that loading a buggy "library" can crash Pd on startup.

any way of getting a different, specified, prefs or pdrc file instead
of the standard one using the command line? this would be very useful
if you are running more than 1 version of pd.

Maybe this is what simon means, but I would like to be able to associate preferences to particular patches. Is that possible?

only paths and libraries so far (via 'declare'). I'm thinking about adding other stuff (audio/MIDI setup?) but am tending to think I should make a good message interface fro them instead.

yes!! To my mind all useful command-line options should have message
counterparts, so that all that can be set up patch-based, especially
the audio/video setup.
Please note, that the development branch already has it, including a
new callback-based portaudio-driver and a lot of midi fixes.
best greetings, Thomas

i had that problem a month ago, i had to edit the registry, but after that something went funny with PD and i think i ended up deleting all registry entries bout pd and reinstalling it.
