Hallo
Some one know how to grab live DV cam input into PD-PDP or GEM ?? ( under linux )
under WIN32 i use pixel_video_ds and is working just fine
i find a not very elgant way : on this page http://www.rmatsumoto.org/camera/dc1394-ohphone.html
Grab dv input and do a raw stream to ffmpeg and use PDP_ffmpeg input whit PiDiP
some one have another solution ?????
tanks
PS (and about output to DVcam ??? or (dv to analog) converter ???)

might be an option, but any DV which is video 4 linux compatible should work with PDP ( pdp_v4l ).
cheers, sevy

correct me if i am wrong, but i never have heard of a ieee1394-device that is supported by v4l.
i'd really love it. (would save a lot of time i already spent (and still have to) for the videoDV4L code in Gem)

hi,
yep, you're right, it's not directly compatible but i meant, a camera you can plug on a video 4 linux device ( http://home.t-online.de/home/gunther.mayer/bttv/bttv-gallery.html ). there's a nifty usb adaptor at the bottom of the page ( Provideo PV-321C ), i'd like to get one soon .
of course, it would go through analog conversion.
this chapter is quite interesting for me because i must do a capture object for mac osx and there's no video 4 linux on OSX.
so, Gem is supporting ie1394 capture on all platforms ? it is digital capture through firewire? does it work good or do you need a fast machine to cope with the bitrate ?
we might do a pdp_ie1394 object, but what about usb cams then ? how do they work on OSX ?
i kinda of ignorant in the DV field actually because we mostly use USB webcams.
thx for enlighting me, sevy

of course this works, but most people that spent their money on a DV-cam want to use it directly, not via a/d/a/d conversion.

thanks for the link. i was looking for a analog2usb converter before christmas and bought a pinnacle pctv deluxe; this is (of course) not supported by linux; and what is even better, under windows the device can only(!) be accessed by the pinnacle-software that comes with the product : pretty shitty

it is well supported under windows (DirectShow) and macOS (QuickTime) the support under linux i consider a bit - hmm - experimental.
it is digital capture through firewire?
exactly
does it work good or do you need a fast machine to cope with the bitrate ?
(continue to talk about linux) it did work for me, although decoded frames sometimes turned out a bit "digitally distorted" (well known when using "fast forward" on digital devices) it wasn't too bad but i guess you cannot "sell" it.
unfortunately i cannot remember when exactly i did my tests (this is important since my motherboard died, and i know have a 2GHz AMD with a lot of RAM while i had an 800MHz PIII before)
probably i'll redo the tests this weekend.
and since Franz obviously uses it, it should really work :-)
we might do a pdp_ie1394 object, but what about usb cams then ? how do they work on OSX ?
on osX everything is covered by the QuickTime-API, so any camera should work. (i don't how video/osX is implemented in pdp)
and of course, i didn't do the osX-part of the pix_video, so i might be completely wrong.

There's also the Hauppauge USB-Live: http://registration.hauppauge.com/webstore/usblive.asp It should hopefully work with this driver: http://www.emuit.com/webcam.html
The maximum resolution is 352x288, for both the PV-321 and the USB-Live, because they use (slow) USB 1.1.
A new PV product is very interesting: http://www.provideo.com.tw/PV326C_SDK.htm It can capture at up to 704x480, and uses USB 2.0, but I don't know if there's drivers for Linux.

sorry, but there's this one out there, which is bundled with a v4l2 driver :: http://www.1394imaging.com/products/interfaces/dfg13941/

oke, now i know the plan to have a really functional capture interface in PDP :
a/ do a vloopback object that can interface with Coriander ( http://www.tele.ucl.ac.be/PEOPLE/DOUXCHAMPS/ieee1394/coriander/ ) to support IEEE1394 capture on linux.
b/ support v4l2 in pdp_v4l ( which now only supports v4l ). is it upward compatible by the way? anyone?
c/ do a quicktime based capture object for OSX ( we will borrow some code from Gem, thanx ).
d/ windows, errr, windows, no plans for this. ( anyway, pdp does NOT run on window )
any volunteers? we're hiring !! ( but i dunno if you'll get paid for that )) )

I would strongly advise you to read the QT docs on Sequence Grabbers
and components, as well as general QT conventions. Although the code
is quite simple and QT takes all of the low level headaches out of
video capture, there are still many issues that you will run into. One
is pixel format - QT supports most of the common FOUR CC ones, but you
might not be using one of them in pdp, and need to roll your own code.
Another is the various flags passed to SG calls that can drastically
affect both performance and quality of the video. One hint about the
flags: they don't always do what they say especially when the
descriptor is something like 'high quality'. Also, QT is designed to
run inside of a classic Mac type app with an specific event loop
structure, and not a Unix process like Pd. This has brought me an
nearly unlimited amount of joy in the past while banging my head
against the QT API wall.

one more detail, while waiting for these new objects in pdp :
right now, you can use gem capture objects and convert them to pdp with gem2pdp bridge, the drawback is that the bridge slows down the framerate ( a lot ) because it's based on OpenGL capture. ( IOhannes, do you think there's another way of doing this ? )

I think is easier to write a pdp_dvcam under linux object i am start look on this, a take the code from dvgrab...
Yves if you have some sujestion on writing pdp objet ;-) help is wellcome
or maby i easyer whit ffmeg source code i can grab also dv1394 ...

hi,
nice that you want to join our efforts )
well, i can be a little more precise about the tasks :
a/ it's already possible to get the dvcam input in pdp by using Coriander and the vloopback module : Coriander grabs the ieee1394 input and can write in a vloopback device, pdp just sees this as a v4l input, i guess it works but i can't test it because i don't have any dvcam ( nor a firewire interface ).
b/ it would be better if there was a native pdp object for dvcams, for the same reasons as above, i won't be able to do it myself. we will provide you all the help needed to get into PDP development.
c/ i will be doing a Mac OSX capture object as soon as i get an ibook ( some people will lend me one ).
d/ i will do the missing vloopback object in PDP ( the one that writes to vloopback ), it is useful for different purposes.
e/ first, i must do a quicktime stream reader, then the vloopback object.
welcome to pdp's crew, sevy
