Hello list-o-mine~,
I am thinking of getting a cellular phone, but it would be really cool if I had a phone that could do PD stuff with a mic in and speaker out jacks like the zaruas, 'cept a phone.
This looks promising if PD runs in java... http://onlinestored.cingular.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ES_PROD_PHONE_DET...
Any advice? I would pay perhaps $500USD for such a device but it would have to be SWEET! Like having a clean mic input for field recording, big hard drive, run linux, 802.11a/b/g, do my taxes, find me a girlfriend... Something along thoes lines.
Thanks for the help! -thewade

yes!

well, if PD runs in java than it is probably jMax (but hold on, this is not true too)
so this is likely to not work.

interesting, but how can i get a new session ?
Any advice?
günter once mentioned (at the pd04) that they might be working on something like pd of cellphones, but i am not sure what the status of the project is (and it might be commercial :-()

with a session that link points to the Nokia N-Gage QD... http://www.n-gage.com/en-R1/gamedeck/ngage_qd/
but yeah, nothing special, java/symbian... not likely to to run pd anytime soon.
... not unless someone like guenter owes you a huge favour ;)

What about the (long time) forthcoming Linux cellphones - e680 a760? Are they contenders for running PD?

I got one of those, an E680. You can order them via ebay and they get sent from hong kong. It is very nice, a 400 MHz Xscale cpu, memory expansion with those little cards. Pretty cheap for a smart phone or pda, about 300 euros + shipping. Comes with english and chinese handwriting recognition. But, the kernel may be linux, it is really well hidden. I think motorola and qtech want people to do java apps (midlets they are called). Direct coding in C or C++ for the machine needs some kind of "official" development contract I think. I saw some posts in the hong kong linux forum that said how to get shell access through usb, but I haven't been succesfull. I still need to put it through its paces though. I still haven't tried it with a decent microphone f.i. I need to get one of those 1 or 2 GB memory cards for it and then it should be at least good as an ipod mini or a decent portable recorder. It does have a kind of java openGL, (with games) so maybe it could run pd+GEM if I ever figure out how to program for it. So at least one pd user/programmer (myself) is occasionally fiddling with those.

hard drive, run linux, 802.11a/b/g, do my taxes, find me a girlfriend... Something along thoes lines.
Ah, you need a linux based chick-magnet phone. I heard of one that was being jointly produced by Siemens and DoCoMo called DoMeMo. It's cylindrical, to produce an impressive pants-pocket-bulge. A couple of months ago both Orange and Vodafone in the UK were giving away a pair of super tight jeans with each DoMeMo phone. It runs linux and even comes with a special version of PD with abstractions for doing pheromone synthesis.

hey..
this one just hit slashdot today:
Mobile Phone with PC running Linux 2.6 Handhelds
A8 writes "There is a new toy (aka the S101) around the corner from a German company called Road GmbH. Looks like the Nokia Communicator, but is a little PC with GSM, GPRS, IrDA, Bluetooth, WLAN -- you name it, running Linux 2.6/Qtopia! Sorry seems like the page is in German only." There are also versions based on the same hardware but running Windows CE and Symbian.
ciao..
