Hey all,
I am here in Zaragoza, Spain at the gohan workshop. I am impressed
by how many people here are running Debian/Ubuntu. It was the most
popular OS at the workshop! This also made me realize what a mess
that Pd-extended installer was. So here is my first attempt to
rectify the situation, I made a .deb. Please test it out:
http://idmi.poly.edu/pdlab/Pd-0.39.2-extended-rc4/Pd-0.39.2-extended- rc4.deb
A couple notes:
same time as the "puredata" Debian package
since that is not included in normal Debian (AFAIK)
pretty icon, please tell me if that doesn't work
Anyone know how to handle file associations with GNOME? I would like
to add that.

good news - it was also on my todo list to make debs for pd-extended ... ;), I will test it.
it would be nice to have it also for the daily autobuilds !

Please keep it on your todo list! This is a quick hack, this stuff
should really be made into proper Debian packages, with separate
packages for each library.

I'll do that shortly.

Access to computers should be unlimited and total. - the hacker ethic
- it installs into /usr/local so you can have it installed at the
same time as the "puredata" Debian package
i'm not complelety fluent in the content of the fhs, but isn't /usr/ the place to install packages, that are managed by the package manager of the distribution? i can't remember, that i came across any rpm, ebuild or deb, that installed something in /usr/local, though ...

Wonderful. But: It's my strong opinion, that with a real package manager like dpkg/apt externals should be in a different package from Pd. Everything else for Debian/Ubuntu is packaged like that.

A source package would be good, but that will probably happen as part
of someone making real debian packages. This is just a quick wrap up
of the binaries.

It doesn't seem to show itself within the usual system environment but according to their website it is quite easy to interface it using a few lines of c. They also provide the necessary tools. It was going to be for a student project that didn't happen so I will drop it for now. /Anders

exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an

it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into

Does this include any updates to the code since rc3, or is it only rc4 by virtue of being a deb package?

Yes, there are updates, and will be more updates before I make the
full rc4 release. I just taught a workshop and so I have a list of
bugs to fix :D. I just wanted to test the package first, so that the
rc4 release will include fixes to the package.

Excuse my linux dumb questions: aren't .deb packages supposed to be installed into /usr ? How can I deal between cvs install, the pd-40-2 package from debian-multmedia in /usr and pd-extended, do i have to remove my precious cvs install from /usr/local to test extended?

On GNOME, I've got pd-40-2 installed from apt-get, it has added an icon, and file association, and I've given to the pd version I've made a different name for the file association, so now I can open pd files with right click and choose which version of pd I want (pd == /usr/lib/pd/bin/pd, pdcvs /usr/local/lib/pd/bin/pd, desire == /home/patco/pd/bin/pd.)

This is x86. Unfortunately, both Debian/powerpc machines that I have
died (the G3 in the build farm, and my old G4 laptop).

Yes, it should go into /usr. This is a quick hack. It installs
into /usr/local to prevent clashes with the puredata package.
Perhaps it should instead install into /usr and then uninstall
"puredata" upon installation (aka "Conflicts:").

Hello Hans-Christoph, I couldn't really help right now with those files, maybe you could find it into the pd-0.40-2 package from debian-multimedia, that's where my installation come from. I've just added pdcvs to the menu with GNOME tools, in preferences (notice that I had to drag'n'drop the pd-extended icon you've provided, into the icon browser that is appearing when I click on the button for changing the application icon), sorry for my linux dumbness, that's the only way i've found yet for associating files. I'll give hints obviously if I go deeper into file associating.
Thank you very much Hans! This is a small step for you, but a great step for Humankind :)

we are adding documentation for PD in spanish to puredata-es wiki. Thinking of course, specialy, in GNU/Linux users. (future is open source) http://puredata.lynksee.com/wiki/Documentaci%C3%B3n_sobre_Pure_Data
I hope to announce a deb package of pd-extended nextly, whould be nice!
From same wiki, We advice to install those nexts dependences:
sudo apt-get install make liba52-0.7.4 libjack0.100.0-0 libmpeg3-1
libquicktime0 libgsl0 libmagick++9c2a libmagick9 libmpeg1 jackeq jack-rack
qjackctl jackd lame libavifile-0.7c2 libimlib2
after to install your standard extended package from your web. http://puredata.lynksee.com/wiki/C%C3%B3mo_instalar_Pure_Data#Pure_Data_Exte...
Any help for to have a good instruction for to install pd-extended in spanish, is wellcome. (we need more translators)
