does anyone know of any audio interfaces (firewire or usb) that have 8 outs and work with linux?
I need the 8 outs for a specific surround sound setup (16 bit is fine, 24 bit prreferable).
i looked through the alsa guide, but I couldn't locate specific types. there are a lot of gaming cards or extremely expensive hardware. I'm looking for something in the middle, like the Firewire 410. actually, if that one works that would be perfect.
AFAIK, firewire is not yet supported, although you might be able to get it
to work with jack. Let's call it untested at best.
Does it have to be either USB or Firewire? There are a lot of nice pci
cards with multi channel support, f.i. those based on the envy24 chips.
USB is not really ideal for audio, especially multichannel. That would
probably require USB 2, and which means you need kernel 2.6 (I think)
which can be difficult to set up for good audio performance.

Well, but USB1 works. For example the Audiotrak Maya 7.1 works fine - I have tested it - doing 8 channel output with ALSA (@ 16bit/44.1kHz only, but that's a restriction by the USB1 bandwith.) The Maya 7.1 isn't expensive, too.
Of course if PCI would be an option, it will always be better.

Does anybody know the difference between 7.1 and 8 channel audio? I am really confused about this. Is it only the implied use, or is 7.1 already "encoded" in some way for a specific speaker setup (front L-M-R, mid L-R, back L-R plus a subwoofer) ??
ciao Gerard

I don't know what or if there is a difference , but from the Pd perspective, the "Maya USB 7.1" (7.1 is part of the device name) is simply an 8 channel device with 8 independent cinch jacks. So I guess, it depends, on what you connect there.
