For some reason, they don't work like that. YOu need to:

[any2bytes] or [bytes2any]

(almost missed this one; sorry)... this sounds very odd: I thought I had eliminated all black magic (e.g. multi-object library, class_addcreator(), etc.) from the pdstring externals during the bytes|wchars re-factorization a while back... urgh... might have to do with a static global flag i used as a workaround... no time to dig any deeper now, but i'll put it on the todo list...
