hi folks.
i hope someone here has an idea of what's going wrong. i'm running ubuntu hoary 5.04 and i installed puredata via apt. i try running "pd" and nothing happens. when i run the command from a terminal, it just sits there with no result. eventually, i hit control-c and get "Pd: signal 2"
i also tried downloading and building from source, but have the same issue.
any ideas? i know it's hard without any error messages.
thanks, jake

id try 'pd -verbose -d 3' and see if theres more details. chances are it is having difficulty finding the pd-gui files or something..or maybe hanging try to open audio , very bizarre however..
did you try the same running as root (or not as root) ?

hi, if it is a new installation of ubuntu - it is the first audio application you try to start maybe the soundcard is allready in use by the desktop soundserver.
I had this problem running ubuntu and tried to start the jackserver - would have been the same for pd. When I started the jackd server via the qjackctl interface i got an error sayinng that the hw:0 (the first soundcard in my system) is allready in use. A Desktop like Gnome or Kde can run its own soundserver. So I had a look if Gnome's soundserver (esd, Kde is artsd) was running - and it was. So find the process and kill it :)
ps -auxwww | grep esd kill processnumber
# After that I was able to start the jackd server. #To make this permanent: # The startup of the gnome soundserver was stopped when I # disabled the startup in system-preferences-sound preferences. # And I could start the jack-server after it.
# btw: if you have also problems with the alsa sequencer. This is # what I found on the net about it:
# See if the snd-seq kernel module is loaded (as root): /sbin/lsmod | grep snd-seq # If it is not there, load it explicitly: /sbin/modprobe snd-seq # Try starting your application...
# loading explicetely worked fine for me.
cheers simon

Hi guys,
first the good news: pd does work in ubuntu. (I had exactly the same problem two days ago) A fresh install of Ubuntu-Hoary is missing the 'snd_seq_oss' module. try: 'lsmod | grep snd' to find out. then 'sudo modprobe -i snd_seq_oss' (if it's missing) now try pd. Don't forget to disable all sound in Gnome ( system/settings/audio, deselect 'start sound server with gnome') If it's now working, you need to make the changes permanent: I use a tool called 'modconf' to do so. It's not in the ubuntu repositories, download it from any debian-mirror. Reboot to make sure youre in an initial state, otherwise 'modconf' will tell you that 'snd_seq_oss' is installed an therefore won't do anything. Do 'sudo modconf' scroll down to '/kernel/sound/core/seq/oss', hit enter. select 'snd_seq_oss', hit enter; no special parameters required. Now exit. You can use the version of pd thats in ubuntu, or the (slightly newer) one from debian, they both work. That did the job for me, hope for you too! greets Lutz
hey list, This seems like an ok thread to pose this question: I installed Fedora 3, and i'm not crazy about the "hat" button among other things. Like basically what are the advantages of the various distros? I know this stuff is online but I would like to hear the PD perspective. greg
