so far I see it isnt possible to use the gui of the software, but its a first step i guess
there has been a lot of talk about this peculiar device on the list. is there anyone who actually bought it? is it as good(+cool) as it sounds? what's the manufacturing quality, latency, image + surface quality?

There has been some discussion on the Max and LAD lists. I remember the following points:
is not really freely programmable
the funny thing is that none of the people taking part in the discussions actually owned one, but there seems to have been a number of presentations - also in course of PrutalDruth Berlin, as i was told. Maybe some Berliner can elaborate... Wernfried?
best greetings, Thomas
hello,
i quickly tried one. my point of view is that :
percussion on it.
objects. :-)
playing
(i hope this limitation could be change in future upgrade)
i don't think you'll ever be able to have the gui of your software in this device, but a custum made gui. it work a bit like gripd (you build your gui and then connect to the software) but for any OSC software environement.
image and surface quality are ok, good manufacturing quality. it's very cool. (and expensive)

There has been some discussion on the Max and LAD lists. I remember the following points:
- multi finger touch seems to be robust with little lateny - very
responsive
- the gui has several elements (maybe enough for many application), but
is not really freely programmable
- the prize is breathtaking: about 2500$

- sensing the finger are surprisingly fast : it look like you can play
percussion on it.
- I like the physical point of view for the movement of fader or other
objects. :-)
- I really like the possibility to change the layout of the gui while
playing
...
On a more affordable scale I recently came across the STC-1000: http://www.stc1000.com/ and http://www.tactex.com/STC.htm [1] which is single point, but also looks like fun, according to the videos on the sites, and is much cheaper (~ $200). Anyone tried that?
[1] For a good laugh, also see the video for this Tactex Healthcare product: http://www.tactex.com/Media/Activity%20Monitor%20video%20web.wmv Hilarious, especially if you like me have worked in healthcare before!

wow, that does looks really usefull, especially for $200 ... i want.
from the one video where he's showing the pc's screen with the gui that
he's controlling is looks like htere is some noticable latency, but it
didnt seem to interfer much with his playing the drum kit on the
drums.mpg vid.
I have the stc1000, so far I haven't done anything incredible with it,
but it definitely has a ton of potential. The unit is extremely
solid (seriously. the top of the thing is ~1/4" thick aluminum).
The device is capable of 512x512 resolution but currently is limited
by MIDI. I think they're working on a middleware application to fix
this. I think the response time is supposed to be in the range of
7ms. The patch design software is also very usable.
