I all, using pd with the GUI if I want to know the midi-out devices in my computer I go on main-menu->Media->MidiSettings and I can obtain one complete list of devices usable.
How I can obtain this list using pd with the -nopgui opton ?
Lazzaro
start PD with the "-listdev" flag. writes all MIDI and audio devices available into the console window
ciao

thanks for the answer but if launch "pd -nogui -listdev" from an other application es.
proc startpd {} { exec <path_pd>/pd.exe -nogui -listdev -open patch_with_net-receive.pd & }
I cannot see those informations because I have no terminal available and make a redorection like es. exec <path_pd>/pd.exe -options > textfile.txt dont work.
some tips?

to the flags to make pd output something via the stderr instead of the tk-console
with your redirection. unfortunately i don't know of any stream-redirections for windows (which doesn't mean they don't exist)
some tips?
and then of course the question, why would you need to know such a thing like the names of the midi-out devices if you have no gui.

I use 0.37 (I need the executables for win and mac).
- pd outputs to stderr and not to stdout. this might be the problem
with your redirection. unfortunately i don't know of any stream-redirections for windows (which doesn't mean they don't exist)
Yes, I had read these stdout related things in the archives of the pd-mailinglist (for this, initially, I have not asked on that argument).
I am hoping that existed in pd a command like:
; pd listmididev;
:)

I have a GUI, I have created one appropriate GUI (with tcl/tk) for children. My GUI and pd communicates in bidirectional way through socket connections. I would want to create a panel of configuration (in my GUI) in which the customer can choose if to use the sounds of the audio card (generally not many beautiful) and those of a soft-synth.

Hi, does anyone know if there is an object that will let me display a simple jpeg, or bmp on my canvas? Is there a way of doing this without using GEM? Cheers, ROry.

there is an "image" object in the cvs that display a .bmp in the canvas. it works well.
Is there a way of doing this without using GEM?
I don't think so : gem only work in a separated windows.

for the moment you could try FRAMESTEIN for this.
a little awkward (FRAMESTEIN has to be started as an extra server-program), but on the other hand, a framestein window offers drag&drop features.

I'm also keen to find such a thing.
Tim referred to 'toxy', but I could not find anything that fit the description.
Maybe griPD can do this? rod

"toxy" allow you to execute a tcl/tk script inside PD

As far as I know there are several ways it can be done but none of which are straight forward. Does anyone know who wrote the 'image' object that's in the CVS? I know nothing of CVS so if the author is on the list would he/she mind sending me the dll?
regards, Rory.

I think the the image.dll is in the package that you can download from sourceforge. If this is not working, I can do an update of the windows packages there. But this will take some days, cause my windows partition is in a very bad state.

install toxy. clickable image object that sends a bang:
widget bang b3 -image [image create photo i3 -file c:/test.gif] -width [image width i3] -height [image height i3]
Can anyone explain what exactly this routine does? When trying to write an object to display a bitmap or jpeg on the PD canvas I came across this very useful routine. I guess itÂs a routine that interpreters tcl/tk scripts? Can anyone explain what exactly is does and what the parameters are? Cheers, Rory.

Pd is a client-server system connected by a socket. the client sends to the server using the "pd" proc in Tcl, in the same format as [netsend]. The server sends to the client Tcl commands using sys_gui(), and the client calls "eval" on them.
sys_gui() takes a single string argument. sys_vgui() is a combination of sprintf() with sys_gui(), so it takes the same arguments as printf(), which are (const char *format, ...) where format is a %-string.
