Hi there !
I have a question concerning vst plugins/instruments under linux.
I would like to use vst/plugins/instruments lets say absynth under linux and being controlled by pure data.
I wonder if someone has tried a setup like that.
Is it better to run vstserver or to run cubasesx under wine and within that the vst-plugins/instruments ???
Does someone have a cubasesx running under wine with vst instruments inside ??? How do i communicate with pd ?? Through midi-audio /JACK-connction ???
The howto i found
http://www.djcj.org/LAU/quicktoots/toots/vst-plugins/
is a little bit too superficial (at least for me since i am not such a linux expert) , Is there anything more in depth - including all the steps for wine etc ???
Thanks in advance
Luigi

Have you tried to contact the author of that tutorial ? He might actually be able to help you if you wrote to him directly, particularly since he does indeed run VST instruments in Pd under Linux.
Best regards,

Do you know if the author of that tutorial has managed to solve the problems he had when upgrading to redhat 9? ;) I'm curious about what was the problem, as I get quite a few questions about the vstserver privately.

IIRC the problem was with WINE, not RH9. I currently set up your system exactly as described in my tutorial (except I forgot to mention the use of ldconfig after installing libraries). Before that tutorial was put on-line I erased WINE, the vstserver, and both clients, then started fresh, following all instructions for building each part. Everything works here under RH 9 (PlanetCCrma release). I downloaded the latest WINE sources yesterday and will soon try it out too.
Btw, I note that closegui in PD doesn't work, the VST plugin GUI stays on screen until an explicit kill. Have you seen this happen ?

Ah, good to hear. I feared that it wouldn't work under rh9 for some reason.

Can't remember seeing that.

Running cubasesx under wine seems like a bad idea, since its such a big program. But it might work. My bet is that its easier to try and get the vstserver to work.

Sorry, its not easy to set up. Except, if you run mandrake. Then there are rpm-packages available.
