Hi,
I just downloaded Pd-Extended 0.42.5 for Ubuntu (i was using an older snapshot which had some troubles) and tried to open some pdp examples, but they don't work, at least not out-of-the-box.
They don't open any window and there is no "create" message or anything that looks like it is supposed to open a window - so I guess it is supposed to open automatically, isn't it? Anyway if I send a [create( message to pdp_glx a window is opened but nothing happens in it.
When I bang the metro in the examples, I start getting the following errors: pdp_v4l: auto open failed pdp_v4l: no device opened pdp_v4l: attempting auto open pdp_v4l: retry count reached zero for /dev/video0 pdp_v4l: try to open manually
Any idea of what can be the problem? Am I missing something?
thanks m.
HI. in my experience in Linux if your machine is relatively new you should replace the object v4l by v4l2, if you're on osx change the same for pdp_ieee1394-
Pdp works very fine
Bet regards

Hi,
Thank you, but that seems to me more of a reference (or even a mere list) of individual objects. I'm looking for an introduction or getting started guide,
I mean, where I can find answers to questions like: what is a packet? What kind of data do pdp objects handle? What is the bare minimum you need to work with pdp (like [gemwin] and [gemhead] in gem)?
Is there such a guide or reference manual? If not, I guess I can learn it by looking at help patches but what objects should I start from?
thanks m.

Degoyon's page only directly talks about PiDiP, Degoyon's add-ons to PDP.
PiDiP is a separate library that works within PDP's framework.
And contrary to PDP, PiDiP is non-free software, as in it's not FLOSS.
I mean, where I can find answers to questions like: what is a packet?
It's a piece of data together with a type tag. That's extremely generic, as in, it hardly specifies any structure at all. There's a corresponding message type that has the selector 'pdp', for carrying pointers around.
After that, you have several type tag patterns that correspond to specific data formats such as float matrices and three kinds of images.
What kind of data do pdp objects handle? What is the bare minimum you need to work with pdp (like [gemwin] and [gemhead] in gem)?
Just like GridFlow, PDP doesn't have a central metro/window bundle like [gemwin] and [gemhead] are. Instead, a window waits to get an image into an inlet of its corresponding object. However, unlike GridFlow, PDP supports only one window per window-class (one for [pdp_glx], one for [pdp_xv], ...) whereas GridFlow supports one window per window-object, so that [#out x11] four times opens four windows.
That said, PDP, just like GridFlow, doesn't need a window, in order to be able to do work. That is unlike GEM, except that since GridFlow introduced [gemdead] (sic), you can now use GEM pix objects without [gemwin]/[gemhead] and thus you don't need to have a window open anymore.

Yes kind of guessed that, but I was directed there in response to asking about a general pdp introduction...

Thank you very much. Is all that documented somewhere?

Look at pdp/doc/reference.txt for a list of classes. Then try each window output class to know what I mean.
For more general packet stuff, there is pdp/doc/misc/layers.txt, overview.html, and pdp/doc/introduction, and so on... all of pdp/doc except pdp/doc/objects (which are per-class help patches).

Ok I knew I had to be missing something. Where is all that stuff located?
I have no "doc" folder in /usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/pdp nor do I have any "pdp" folder inside /usr/lib/pd-extended/doc ...
Thanks m.

PDP's presence in Pd-extended is quite truncated. I don't know why (doesn't make sense). You have to download a source package from PDP's site instead.

The patches inside the "introduction" directory have been moved into the example directory in Pd Extended. I had overlooked them being inside the example directory, thinking they'd be similar to other example patches (which definitely are not aimed at someone not already familiar with the basics of pdp).
The file "layers.txt" doesn't exist in "misc", nor does overview.html but there is old-overview.html, which however, is very similar in content to the project's home page at http://zwizwa.be/pdp/ which doesn't explain very much.
I'll have a look at the introduction patches and the help patches for the window objects, I guess I can start from there.
Thanks again m.

Erratum :
I remember having to do something like use one object of each class for the purpose of doing something, but I don't quite remember what it was, and I'm pretty sure it was in 2004 or 2005. The PDP currently on my machine can open multiple [pdp_glx] windows and [pdp_xv] windows.
Now that I think of it, it probably was instead something to do with multi-screen video cards that would only allow GL on the first screen.

the SDL library is still single-window, AFAIK, so it's normal that you only have single-window support for that. If multi-window support has been added, then it must be a fairly recent change.

Using multiple windows using GEM ? Or using one GEM window per instance of Pd and have many Pd instances ? What was your problem with GEM and gemwins ? ++
