for Windows, so it should be really easy to try nightly builds on

the bin folder.

enable/disable Autopatch mode from Edit menu or Ctrl/Cmd-Alt-A

enable/disable Perf Mode from Edit menu or Ctrl/Cmd-Alt-P (perf = performance, it basically makes it harder to mistakenly close windows, like during a performance)
inlet/outlet highlighting
Magic Glass cord inspector
5 log levels that applies to the complete log history (try changing the log level, you'll see that it shows/hides content dynamically, without forgetting old log messages)
Ctrl/Cmd click on log lines in the Pd window to see which object printed that line (or select line and hit Enter/Return)
'log' library for different levels of logging
backgrounded, high speed logging in the Pd window (you can have thousands of messages a second going to the Pd window, and still work on your patch).

Nice to hear about some progress in these important areas. BTW, did
you merge vanilla MagicGlass and nlet highlighting or the one from the
pd-l2ork? I ask this because vanilla implementations of both of those
have a number of issues, including unnecessary cpu overhead and
potential instabilities.

Yes, magic glass and nlet highlighting came from l2ork, plus a 64-bit
patch from Albert Gräf:

Cool! You may want to check out the test of the l2ork c code as it has quite a number of other stability fixes and improvements including a definitive double-entry bug fix, better object resizing to accommodate nlets, proper reordering of nlets when moving nlet objects inside patches, a definitive fix for all known gop bugs, just to name a few.
Cheers!

I ended up refactoring the magic glass and highlighting code quite a
bit, I think there might be something worth checking out. As for
other bug fixes, it would be great to have them in the patch tracker
so we can sort them out. It would take me a massive amount of time to
figure out what code changes are for what in pdl2ork since there isn't
any version control (that I could find at least) and it seems to be a
mix of 0.42 and 0.43 versions.

If you look at the patch tracker, and filter on Closed ones, you'll see which ones get accepted. Most do. It takes a lot of time to review patches, so if they don't cleanly apply and build, then I'm not really likely to pursue it much further. I've tried figuring out patches like that in the past, and it just takes too much time to try to figure out what's wrong, etc. and it doesn't speak well of the patch if it doesn't past the first hurdle.

While this may be so for a number of patches, my personal experience has been somewhat different with responses most of the time having nothing to do with the patch at hand (if I got any in the first place). I imagine if a patch is declined one would expect it being reported as such with an explanation as to what is the reason for such decision, and ideally with a response that actually makes sense so that an appropriate improvement can be made.
Similarly, while I fully understand that reviewing patches can be quite time consuming, please do not forget that fixing a bug and creating a report in the patch tracker together with supporting documentation can be doubly so.

Now that's you have your own fork going, I think the whole process should be a lot easier. Running Pd-extended made the patch process much easier for me. Having an active fork means that you can develop new fixes and features, then test and use them, and go back and fix them. Then once a bug fix and/or feature is really nailed down and well tested, then that's the time to submit it to the patch tracker. Unless its a simple, critical bugfix, I rarely submit patches from Pd-extended before they've been included in a test release and therefore tested by a bunch of people.
Yes, submitting good patches definitely takes a lot of time, but it saves everyone time in the long run. I've submitted one quarter of the patches in the tracker, so I think I've got a pretty good idea of how much time it takes to submit patches ;-)

Can the 32-bit QuickTime API work at all in 64-bit mode ? It could explain some things... I remember that Apple designed some things as if 64-bit would never happen, and then when was the time to support 64-bit mode, they came up with a new QuickTime interface that is very much different and won't run on OSX-10.4.
As a result, a different GEM component would have to be written to support the new QuickTime. Correct me if I'm wrong. No, two of them, one for the movie files, one for the cameras.
I'm not saying that this is what prevents Gem from building at all... I'm not talking about that kind of problem. But to get a full 64-bit release, much of QuickTime support code has to be rewritten.

AFAIK, Quicktime is dead at 32-bit, and there is a totally new API for
64-bit. Check gem-dev for more info, Chris Clepper has posted more
about it. But since gmerlin, gstreamer and other backends work on Mac
OS X and work in 64-bit, Gem could be build for 64-bit Mac OS X using
those. Then that would lose the highly optimized backend stuff in
Quicktime.

well, obviously there _are_ 64-bit builds for OSX, however they are non-functional - as demonstrated above. afaik, the only crucial missing part is the window handling (for which there are some prototypes, but nothing really working yet)
but it should be possible to get a gstreamer/gmerlin based 64-bit Gem Mac OS X build out without too much work, with IOhannes' new plugin backend.
gstreamer support should be trivial to add to the OSX build nowadays: only configure with "--with-gmerlin_avdec" (or without the "--without-ALL").
nevertheless, there still won't be a window :-(
Or even better, someone could write Gem plugins for the Quicktime APIs that Apple did not port to 64-bit.
well, actually there are plugins for the (non-64bit) QuickTime API - it's what is used nowadays. this however only means, that once we have the window stuff sorted out, Gem will be available on OSX-10.6/64bit without support for video/movie/image loading/saving (as those are depending on QT) - unless some other plugin (e.g. gmerlin/imagemagick) is available.
so rather than writing plugins for the (deprecated) QuickTime API, people should write plugins for the (afaiu: supported and featured) QTKit API (which is available on both 32bit and 64bit)

Here's a nice article about the while Quicktime to QTKit transition:
http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2009/08/mac-os-x-10-6.ars/6
It says that QTKit came out in 2005, and 10.4 came out in 2005, 10.5
in 2007, so perhaps 10.4 supports it. It seems they've been adding to
it over time, so 10.4's QTKit could be more limited. But the Adium
devs say supporting 10.4 would be a lot more work for QTKit Capture:

I tried today 0.43, and it didn't work properly. the audio was just noisy,
and probably out of rate, as changing the value of the intensity in the
test patch made a ramp of a few seconds, instead of ~50ms. And, when the
ramp was up, instead of a sinus tone only noise came out. As I was trying
that while working in a project, I couldn't spend more time with it.
this was on xp, normal soundcard (with + without asio on)

I recently did a push to fix key bugs to get the Pd-extended 0.43
nightly builds in a useable state. Also, there is a new .zip download
for Windows, so it should be really easy to try nightly builds on
Windows. Just download the .zip, unzip, and double-click pd.exe in the
bin folder.

I just tried today's Pd-extended 0.43.1 on chaos.medien.uni-weimar.de
and it worked fine for me. Are others not able to get it to work on
10.6?

(Sorry for the do-over, Hans. I just realized I didn't copy this to the list.)
I just tried it on 10.5 (there doesn't seem to be a 10.5 specific build, so I tried the 10.4 build; is that expected to work?). I tried loading a few patches/abstractions of mine to see what would happen. There seems to be problems with several, but not all, of the vanilla objects. [loadbang], [wrap~], [expr~], [hslider]/[hsl], [cnv], [clip~], [namecanvas], [delay] and a few others didn't instantiate correctly. Also, the [list] family of objects didn't create if they were given an argument.

I recently did a push to fix key bugs to get the Pd-extended 0.43 nightly builds in a useable state.
I tried to install it in ubuntu 10.10 maverick (using the corrensponding i386 deb package). No icon appeared in the gnome panel menu, using "pd-extended" i get the "command not found" message.
I checked the /usr/bin folder, and i found "pd", tried to launch it but i got this:
priority 6 scheduling enabled. priority 8 scheduling enabled. sh: /usr/bin/pd-watchdog: not found Error in startup script: couldn't read file "/usr/tcl//pd-gui.tcl": no such file or directory

Unfortunately, the maverick build server went down, so you downloaded
an old build. If you look at the date of the build you downloaded, it
says 21-Jun-2011.
Its not hard to build the package on Ubuntu, you just need to download
the code via rsync, install the right packages, then run the script:
