Hi,
I just installed ubuntu on my thinkpad, and was trying to compile pd
there. Apt-get and the package administrator only install an earlier
version, so I guess it's necessary for now to do it from the tar.gz file.
The compilation fails, because the c compiler can't output the right file
format (?). Did this already happened to someone? I'm sure it's a basic
thing, but for me that's not basic at all. I join the config.log file, if
it isn't getting too personal.
Greets and thanks,
João Miguel Pais

(I would recommend to get a full checkout from CVS once, so you will be up to date all the time without having to download everything again, "cvs up" will get you all changes.)

You're probably missing a lot of stuff which Ubuntu's default install may think is unnecessary. (While I think, a lot of stuff installed by Ubuntu is unnecessary, but that's another story... ;) Normally if you install the "build-essential" package your compiler should work. For Pd you also need several "-dev" packages, like libasound-dev etc. The easiest way to get these on a Debian system is to install the build-dependencies for the puredata package with "apt-get build-dep puredata".

Hi,
I'm trying to compile pd in ubuntu. I must say that due to old versions
(apt-get), not completely updated/complete documents or whatever it's been
really hard for someone who isn't very experienced with linux. Almost at
each step there's something which must be corrected. That makes the
process everything but fun.
In case it's of interest to anyone, there's a textfile with what I
achieved so far, which is getting the complete cvs archives and building
the standard pd (thanks to a correction of the makefile only listed in the
mailing list archive, already from 2001).
I was now trying to compile the externals. I guess that the better
reference for ubuntu is http://puredata.org/docs/developer/Debian. I got
almost all the packages (some weren't possible to get), but while trying
to compile everything, [cd pure-data/packages/linux_make; make install],
the process didn't work (again).
The report is the following, I cut the successful parts:
-mcpu=' is deprecated. Use
-mtune=' or '-march=' instead.

Perhaps there's a loop in the include files. The warnings you showed were not important, mostly unused parameters and deprecated use of -mcpu. Did you do anything strange with the INCLUDE variable or -I options?

Strange, I can't recreate the mistake. There was an evident loop with the
iem objects. I did altered something in the INCLUDE of a makefile (it's
explained in the link below), but don't know anymore exactly in which. And
it was connected with the build of the standard corpus, not with the
externals.
What would be great is if you document your progress on a wiki page so
that others can learn from your experience easily, and you can remember
what you did in the past. This is all a work in progress, and its a big
project to get integrated. For example, Java 1.4.2 has roughly 8000
objects, Pd has roughly 2000. So Pd is 1/4 the size of Java. Do you
think we have 1/4 of the budget of the Sun Java dept? I wish...

I just added this comment to the bottom of your wiki page:
The above problem was caused because the patches to Pd core were not
applied before compiling. You need to "cd packages && make patch_pd"
before compiling to make sure all the required patches are included.
Also, it will take a lot of manual tweaking unless you use the same
version of Pd-core as the Pd-extended build system (currently, its on
0.39.2).

thanks for the reply. I tried what you said, but it just provokes more
mistakes or questions which I don't even know how to answer, I just said
"y" to everything. Here is a transcript, in case you think it might be
necessary - which it might not, due to the next point you raised.

ok, then how do I get the "correct" version? to get everything I just
followed the instructions given on the
http://puredata.info/docs/developer/Debian page. Which until now it was
the nearest to ubuntu that could be found, I think. I thought that once
these were documented, they would be the right steps to do.
[If anyone's interested I can even make a direct ssh connection with
someone that could compile this on this system and let him work.]

This is actually quite helpful for getting the bugs worked out and
the problems with the documentation fixed up. I added some more info

ok, that helps a bit. But please, don't forget that (as I see it) the
purpose is to make a documentation for someone who doesn't know the
commands or the system. Or documentation wouldn't be necessary at all.
Instead of
cvs checkout -r v0-39-2 pd
the full comands for cvs should be
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/pure-data login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/pure-data
checkout -r v0-39-2 pd
or at least only that way worked here. (of course it took me 1/2hour to
check out the other page and try around until it worked. as I said, I'm
not a programmer, and I'm not a linuxer, all these commands are new to me,
and I guess they should be also for anyone else who takes the suggestions
to try to use a better system than windows)
But this then opens up a newer question: if pd and the externals must be
"in sync", then how is it possible to know what's to do? I can now put
this information on the page, but in one month it will be out of date.
Ok, the compiling goes one step further, but not enough yet. I took out pd
.40 and installed .39-2. Then sudo make patch_pd , cd linux_make/ , sudo
make install , and in the end there are still some errors. What went wrong
is:

Ok, I've never compiled auf Deutsch, so the error messages are not
familiar to me. But I can guess. That message sounds to me like
packages/patches/fftw_support-0.39-1.patch got applied twice. That
patch doesn't really do anything yet, so you could "rm d_fft.c; cvs
update d_fft.c" and just compile without the patch.
Otherwise, post a transcript of the whole compilation session,
including "make patch_pd". FYI: you can check to see if the files
are patched or not by doing "cvs update" in pd/src. None of the
files should show up as modified when the sources are clean, i.e.
fresh from CVS without patches applied. You can always just delete
modified filed, then "cvs update file". If you are using "-
d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/pure-data", then
you'll need to include that in the "cvs -
d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/pure-data update"

There has been many discussions on this topic. Having individual
files is much more flexible. It probably takes up more space, and
undoubtedly there are other issues with it, but its the best solution
for Pd-extended. Plus its how Java manages its classes, so there is
a good precedent for it.

I wouldn't call JAVA a good precedent. The way JAVA fixed most mistakes of C++ is by introducing a different set of mistakes instead and then marketing them as a religion.
I've always considered class==file to be a big mistake, but that's prolly because my first diskettes were formatted in FAT8 with 68 blocks of 2.25k each and there was no way to change this setting so creating lots of small files was a waste of space.

I don't think your work was a waste of time at all, this is what we
all to towards making Pd easier to use for all. If you want some
perspective, look back at the way you used to install Pd:
http://web.archive.org/web/20010404044612/http://www.pure-data.org/
The only way to get Pd was to download the sources and compile them
yourself. There is now 2000+ objects included in Pd-extended, there
is the work of perhaps 100+ people. Its big and complicated, so that
means that building it is not simple.
The effort that you put into getting things working on Ubuntu and
documenting it helps us find bugs, make improvements, and future
people can start with your doc and hopefully take it further.
We aim to make Debian and Ubuntu (or whatever) packages of Pd-
extended, but someone has to do the work. The more people who
contribute, the faster that will happen. These things are not hard
to install by design, but rather because no one has done the work to
make it easy yet.
As for successful compilation on GNU/Linux, if someone else has done
it, you can too. But yes, it can be a painful process.

don't mind about the rants. each small step helps a bit, when the process

Then there's the question that didn't got answered: I guess it might be

directly from cvs, or it won't be possible to keep the externals up to
date. But what's the difference from pd-extended and the cvs version? are
any externals missing, or just the outside work, like abstractions,
documentation, etc.?
I'm thinking now of using the pd-ext as main program, and in a folder
download the remaining material from cvs (and then put everything into
path). Is this a sensible method, or should I think about something else
instead?

Ok, I think I should clarify the Pd distros:
Pd-core
this is sources that Miller maintains. It includes a basic set
of objects
Pd-devel
this is based on based on Pd-core, but has a number of
significant changes
Pd-extended
This is Pd-core with some minor patches and "externals", docs,
etc. from CVS
Pd-devel-extended (coming soon)
This is Pd-devel with "externals", docs, etc. from CVS
All of these are maintained in the same CVS repository. Pd-core from
Miller only has the objects that he's included. There are probably
2000 objects that are not included in Pd-core (many of which are
written in Pd) which are in Pd*-extended.
If you want to use all of the externals, we will all be better off if
we work on the same package. It takes a lot of work to maintain your
own distro, if we work on the same distro, we both will have a better
distro than if we did it ourself.

hey everyone, thanks for help/advice earlier with timing stuff.
the next thing i'd like is to be able to have a nice quick performance-oriented way of editing sequences. i've discovered you can do something along the lines of what i want to do with an array, setting its graph to 'draw as polygon', as on the sequencer part of the zuwift patch.
however there are some quirks with 'draw as polygon' that i'm not too fond of. first, it would be nice to show a hard attack as a hard attack, rather than a soft curve. second, it would be nice to have some visual representation of where 1, 5, 9, and 13 were to take the guesswork out putting something 'on the beat'. third, it would be nice to be able to just click in an empty space where i want the new value to be, rather than having to drag the existing value to the proper level.
what techniques should i be investigating for doing this? possibly i should be looking at the widget external but i'm using windows and it doesn't work (crashes pd on instantiation).

You can build all kinds of custom GUIs and sequencer using the graphical data structures. See http://puredata.org/docs/tutorials/ for some tutorials, and the documentation in doc/4.data.structures

whatever it's been really hard for someone who isn't very
experienced with linux. Almost at each step there's something which
must be corrected. That makes the process everything but fun. In case it's of interest to anyone, there's a textfile with what I
achieved so far, which is getting the complete cvs archives and
building the standard pd (thanks to a correction of the makefile
only listed in the mailing list archive, already from 2001). I was now trying to compile the externals. I guess that the better
reference for ubuntu is http://puredata.org/docs/developer/Debian.
I got almost all the packages (some weren't possible to get), but
while trying to compile everything, [cd pure-data/packages/ linux_make; make install], the process didn't work (again).
What would be great is if you document your progress on a wiki page
so that others can learn from your experience easily, and you can
remember what you did in the past. This is all a work in progress,
and its a big project to get integrated. For example, Java 1.4.2 has
roughly 8000 objects, Pd has roughly 2000. So Pd is 1/4 the size of
Java. Do you think we have 1/4 of the budget of the Sun Java dept?
I wish...

Are you sure its a loop? There are a lot of objects in the iemmatrix
collection, and each object seems to be throwing a lot of warnings,
so that will make it seem like a loop. But compiling the whole
package takes a long time.
For the most part when compiling Pd-extended, you can ignore any
warning/error as long as it keeps building. Only when it stops to
you have to fix something. I've never seem a loop in compilation, so
I would be surprised to hear that's what's going on.

thanks, but that just delays the problem. when a newer version of pd comes
out an update will be necessary. and if it doesn't compile flawlessly now,
it won't as well in the future, I think (although it might).
