after a few days of waiting (for you) and hard labour (for me), Gem 0.93.1, the 1st bugfix release for the 0.93 series, has been released today.
like always we have fixed numerous bugs and features, and most likely introduced an equal number of wishlists and showstoppers.
noteable differences since 0.93.0: functionality bugs:
while no film is loaded
documentation:
dynamically load a plugin at runtime (or change the plugin)
matrices
binaries are available for w32 (installer & zip), for the brave and adventurous there is the source code. binaries for OSX are still not available yet, but we hope to get them online soonish.

it's not compiled with mingw, and it is not planned for 0.93
Gem currently does not compile with mingw (see recent postings on gem-dev@), but it would be a nice feature to have for 0.94 (help would be appreciated; hint, hint :-))
apart from mingw currently not properly compiling Gem at all, there are some more things that ought be kept in mind:
mingw build machine for Gem
remember that there were problems using those with mingw
plugins (cool); unfortunately the plugins (still only) have a C++ API, so you couldn't use a plugin compiled with M$VC within Gem compiled on mingw.
so having Gem build on MinGW would be great, but it is not very high on my todo list (but again, if you feel like doing the work, go ahead; in this case, it might be a good idea to join gem-dev@)
fgmasdr IOhannes
Okay i will join the gem-dev list when I'll get time to work on it... before I'd like to finish the pd-extended build system stuff, there still are problems to get it working.
Using mingw would be great for me because we will be able to use Gem libs on gridflow.

It's not that I would like to have the option of compiling Gem in MinGW, it's that I would like the default builds of Gem to be able to communicate with GridFlow. So it's either that Gem binaries for Windows all use MinGW, or that a workaround is created so that anything that communicates with Gem can do it without being compiled in MSVC.
Otherwise, it would mean that GEM users who want to try GF have to reinstall a different GEM than default just to have something that runs with MinGW.
Afaict, GridFlow will never run with MSVC. Well, it might not be using that many GCC extensions, but I haven't counted them. Maybe it's only variable-sized arrays on stack, and variable number of args in macros.

it was not meant to be self-referring.

I cannot seem to get it to run. I get some funky errors and then either pd will quit or it will not load Gem. I assume some things need to be ironed out. I also posted to the frei0r-devel list hoping that we may get usable frei0r plugins for OSX. Currently it seems like the autobuilds are offline for pd-extened too

hello
i am getting something similar with Pd-0.43.1-extended-20110831.app (my first attempt with Pd-0.43.1-extended).
for me though, when clicking on the App icon the PD window briefly appears and the PD dispersal. I then removed the Gem folder from extra in the Package and PD-Extended-0.43.1 appears fine, obviously with the message "Gem: can't load library" in the console...
I then ran extended from command line, eg:
/Applications/Pd-0.43.1-extended-20110831.app/Contents/Resources/bin/pd -stderr -d 3 -verbose
and all works just fine (Gem included)
question is: why when clicking on App i get an immediate crash (is it a crash?). Is there a way to log the crash by clicking on the App since running from terminal seems fine?
idk
just thought i would let you guys know if the issue.
BTW I am on 10.7.1 ... could that be the issue? Although I do remember now a month or so ago trying an older build of extended 0.43.0 and getting a pretty similar result. PD window immediately goes away.
cheers mar

Gem currently builds on OSX>=10.6 (ia64), but will not run since it still depends on QuickTime. iirc, the release announcement for 0.93.0 was asking for an OSX developer to resolved exactly these issues.
in the meantime, you should be able to get a running Gem-0.93.1 on OSX-10.6/10.7 by forcing it's architecture to 32bit ("--enable-fat-binary=i386")
better still would be to fix the window code (there is a start in Output/gemcocoawindow.mm)

Sorry for the "newbie" question but how do I update the Gem version on my Pd-extended? I know for an external I don't have I just put the external into my Macintosh HD/Library/Pd folder. But what do I do with this new Gem? I can't replace it in the /Library/Pd because it isn't there.
Probably something simple I've missed?
Thanks

if it shows "0.92.3" than it most likely is 0.92.3
elaborated guess: Gem does a bit of path magic to be able to access its own abstractions. this means that it adds it's own path to the list of search paths of Pd. if you then manually edit your search paths and save, you will end up with a hardcoded path to the currently installed version of Gem. if you now install a new Gem into a different location, you still have the old search path stored in your preferences, and Pd is likely to look there first, thus finding and loading the old Gem!
short fix: open your "Path"-preferences and delete all references to the Gem-paths. save. restart Pd

I generally recommend not using the preferences with Pd-extended and instead store the settings in the patch and use the standard install locations.

Yes, that is true. Its not trivial to get Gem building on MinGW, but
I think its definitely doable and without horrible pain, just some
pain ;). The Windows build server is ready to do it, its got the
QuickTime SDK installed. I think the best plan of attack is to do it
incrementally. So first just the most basic, stripped down version of
Gem building, then try adding more features as things get working.
Patrice, if you can take the lead on this, I'll help where I can.

it's not compiled with mingw, and it is not planned for 0.93
Gem currently does not compile with mingw (see recent postings on gem-dev@), but it would be a nice feature to have for 0.94 (help would be appreciated; hint, hint :-))
apart from mingw currently not properly compiling Gem at all, there
are some more things that ought be kept in mind:
- i (personally) currently don't have time nor energy to setup a local
mingw build machine for Gem
- for video capture and image acquisition Gem uses DirectShow and i
remember that there were problems using those with mingw
- all the DirectShow stuff is no longer part of Gem proper, but
lives in plugins (cool); unfortunately the plugins (still only) have a C++ API, so you couldn't use a plugin compiled with M$VC within Gem compiled on mingw.
so having Gem build on MinGW would be great, but it is not very high
on my todo list (but again, if you feel like doing the work, go ahead; in this case, it might be a good idea to join gem-dev@)
I believe that the DirectShow stuff was resolved many years ago. But
I've never tried it. Here's instructions on how to do it with DirectX

i think this has been mentioned on this list a couple of times, but let's do it again
you ought to start Pd from the cmdline/shell/CLI (the thing you get when you do "Cmd-R" and start the "cmd" program), use "pd.com" (rather than "pd.exe"), give it the "-stderr" flag (so it won't print to the pd-console but to the console instead), and eventually add "-verbose
something like:
$ C:\Programme\pd\bin\pd.com -stderr -open patch.pd 2> pd.log
this will print everything into a log-file "pd.log". once you triggered the crash, the pd.log will still be their and ready for future inspection.

no need for a .bat file. .bat files are their for convenience, so you don't need to reiterate simple tasks. let's hope that you don't need to debug so often, that you need a convenience framework for that.
just add "-verbose -verbose" (that's 2* "-verbose") right after ther "-stderr"...

maybe an idea where to start?
well, start form your patch and remove everything that is not Gem. then copy everything left into a flat patch. then remove entire gemchains until only the one that causes the crash is left. then remove objects from this gemchain until only the objects needed to crash are left.

it seems that it has something to do with text3d....first the text was
written directly into the box.....i changed that to message symbol
text.....did not change the crash....

Was that added in Windows 4.0, or later ?
Note that the $ sign is not part of the command. Also, it can confuse users when it gets written in front of a command and after a line that says « type this command : ». I've seen it happen.

true. but it's the best formatting i can come up with to make a cli-command explicit. luckily, it seems that markus figured that out himself.
