Here is my *working* proposal for beginner-friendliness: the Pd Documents directory. Also includes deken-workingness.
Thanks to Miller for the new "add-to-path" message.
Video demo: https://youtu.be/YWMnynyIeoc https://youtu.be/YWMnynyIeoc
The documents path is an optional beginner-friendly location for patches and externals and defaults to USERHOME/Documents/Pd. If the docs path is not set when Pd is started, the user is prompted about creating it and it can be changed or disabled in the Path preferences dialog. If the user hits Cancel, the docs path functionality is disabled. A subdirectory for externals is also created and is set as the deken install directory. Once set, the docs path becomes the preferred initial directory for file dialogs to help those new to filesystem hierarchy.
Included in this work: deken can now optionally add external directories to the user search paths via a popup after download.

As the someone who's been nagging the most about this, let me say:
Yes, there are issues I already brought up and I'm still concerned with them, but I wanna make it clear that they don't translate to any sort of objection to these features. So I just hope this is taken and included on the next release, and we deal with those issues in appropriate timing.
cheers and thanks for being awesome and doing awesome stuff

Now, in order to make this more like how we've been dealing with "standard path", could the "*externals install directory*" also load its contents to the "help browser"?
That would take one issue out of the way. But it doesn't have to be "now".
cheers

Ok, first bug report:
"externals" subfolder (say "libs" for example) and hit ok, it still creates an "externals" subdirectory and adds it to the search path, whereas "libs" is not added! Though deken still asks me to download to "libs". As I see, it shouldn't create "externals" nor add it to the path, and then add "libs" to the path.

Not everyone may want this functionality... Disabling it means Pd won't nag you if the docs path is not set and new/open panels start in the home directory (as before), not the docs path.
The other stuff you are seeing are bugs from my rewrite earlier today, so easy fixes. Please post bugs only to the GitHub PR.

Hi Dan,
I tried Pd-0.48.0-test6-docspath3.app.zip on osx 10.11.6
Paths Documents/Pd, and the sub dir 'externals' were all created
It also gets added, after about one second delay, with message (log 4), which is puzzling, but i guess needed: " Pd documents directory: /Users/federicocamarahalac/Documents/Pd "
Whenever I manually change something (verbose, standar paths, add path, etc) and hit OK, I get an app error, with these details:
invalid command name "1"
invalid command name "1"
while executing
"[::pd_docsdir::update_path $docspath]"
(procedure "dialog_path::commit" line 21)
invoked from within
"$commit_method $listdata"
(procedure "do_apply" line 2)
invoked from within
"do_apply $mytoplevel $commit_method $listdata"
(procedure "::scrollboxwindow::ok" line 4)
invoked from within
"::scrollboxwindow::ok .gfxstub79f80d60 dialog_path::commit"
invoked from within
".gfxstub79f80d60.nb.buttonframe.ok invoke"
("uplevel" body line 1)
invoked from within
"uplevel #0 [list $w invoke]"
(procedure "tk::ButtonUp" line 23)
invoked from within
"tk::ButtonUp .gfxstub79f80d60.nb.buttonframe.ok"
(command bound to event)
Changes get made, though, so the error is puzzling. Other dialogs works fine.
Startup Dialog: Not a huge deal, but it doesn't come to front when another dialog is open. Will this dialog disappear in the future? I think it's going in that direction
Side note: In the Pd Browser it shows "-----Libraries----" and you have them created under "Pd/externals". I know there's been conversations in the list about this, but I wonder if these shouldn't be at least unified temporarily within pd. I believe Deken already says 'externals' everywhere. It would be useful for translating as well. I like "libraries", because it's more encompassing, but this is confusing when the library is of one external, like those in the extra folder. It might be just easier to think of the 'extra' as a library in itself i guess, and have this as a directory entry.
Pd Browser:
navigating to more than 3 sub directories are not showing. For example, the only option here is to open up the Finder, with double-click or with Return:
externals/Gem/examples/01.basic
I had some issues with Deken, where should I write these?
Thanks for all the changes, you're really sharpening the hell out of the gui.. Very nice!!

Here is my *working* proposal for beginner-friendliness: the Pd Documents directory. Also includes deken-workingness.
Thanks to Miller for the new "add-to-path" message.
Video demo: https://youtu.be/YWMnynyIeoc

Hi Dan,
I tried Pd-0.48.0-test6-docspath3.app.zip on osx 10.11.6
Paths Documents/Pd, and the sub dir 'externals' were all created
It also gets added, after about one second delay, with message (log 4), which is puzzling, but i guess needed: " Pd documents directory: /Users/federicocamarahalac/Documents/Pd "
There is 1 second delay after starting the GUI before the docs directory path is checked. The print comes after that to confirm the current path at start.
Whenever I manually change something (verbose, standar paths, add path, etc) and hit OK, I get an app error, with these details:
invalid command name "1" invalid command name "1" while executing "[::pd_docsdir::update_path $docspath]" (procedure "dialog_path::commit" line 21)
Fixed.
Startup Dialog: Not a huge deal, but it doesn't come to front when another dialog is open.
I'm not seeing that behavior, unless you mean under the audio or midi dialogs which are always on top of other windows when open.
Will this dialog disappear in the future? I think it's going in that direction
If someone wants to work on that, maybe. Probably not me any time soon after this release. I have some ideas, but I *really* have to get work on other things after this release.
I can change the naming of Libraries to Externals, but I am not changing the listing behavior for now. Especially after spending time just putting it back together after the user search path stuff was removed previously.
Browser updates won't appear in the docs path test builds as that work is in another branch.
Pd Browser:
navigating to more than 3 sub directories are not showing. For example, the only option here is to open up the Finder, with double-click or with Return:
externals/Gem/examples/01.basic
That's because I limited the max # of cols to 3 because there is no horizontal scroll bar aka if you keep opening new columns, you can scroll back unless you click back or use the keyboard. We can bump the max to 4 if you want. I didn't feel like spending another *1-2 whole days* on adding & testing browser horz scrolling...
I had some issues with Deken, where should I write these?

You're right. That's what I was encountering.

That's fine, i'm just being picky now.

Ha! ok, 4 colums should do it, but that's about the limit for 13.3'' display i guess
About the Deken issue, I thought it was it but it wasnt.
I think what happened was that the first time i opened your previous built, Pd created Pd/externals, and I immediately tried getting gem, and had issues with the extraction, getting duplicate folders + tar file (same with zexy, tof, cyclone,etc)
Now I just tried Pd-0.48.0-test6-docspath4.app and Deken could download and extract Gem perfectly to Pd/extenals
I think it is because pd/externals was already created beforehand, but i havent tested that
translating: I noticed newer strings. When and where would it be safe to make a PR for spanish before the release?
You might wait for some more feedback, but I don't anticipate changing too many more of the base strings so far.
You can make a PR to the feature/docsdir
branch.
