hello
some time ago I read that the next Linux kernel (current version is 2.4.x) will originally include the latest ALSA driver as the generic sound driver (maybe OSS will be abandonned)
do you know when this kernel (2.5) is released ? I could not find any information about this
I'm very interested in this new kernel, because currently the most recent Hammerfall sound cards (like mine) are not directly compatible with the ALSA driver anymore (hdsploader problem, related to the RME Hammerfall PCI hardware revision v1.8 and higher whose firmwares are not downgradable)
I saw there are new versions of the ALSA driver too, but I haven't tested them yet (maybe this RME problem was corrected ; I should try installing these new drivers)
On planetCCRMA, the ALSA driver is still 0.9.6, I remember the hdsp problem remained with this version (there was a solution provided by Thomas Charbonnel, consisting in the new hdsploader (that was NOT included in alsa-0.9.6), but I didn't have the time to install it properly and now I have forgotten all information about it)
is there anyone on this list who uses a recent Hammerfall dsp sound card under Linux ? when did you buy your card ?
thanks,
j
I can't get my hammerfall PCI card to work under ALSA either... Any advice would be very helpful!
cheers Miller

hi hdspd-ers!
*) concerning the "too new firmware" problem: the only workaround i know to downgrade the firmwareversion (you can only do that in windows or macOS) *) i once got a hdsp9652 pci card with external adat-interface to work by using alsa 0.9rc7 and fooling the driver to think of the card as a different one.
you will find more detailed descriptions in the howto i startet to write a while ago:

unfortunately the recent hdsp PCI cards (at least hardware revision v1.8) are not downgradable from fimware v11 to v10
it's sure that hardware revision v1.4 is downgrable (or has already the firmware v10) ; all the hdsp cards I saw running under Linux were v1.4

I don't have the card, but I am sure that the latest alsa drivers are more (or at least as well) up to date as the ones in the kernel. I would try the 0.9.8 first, before switching the kernel.

Julien,
I have a newish hdsp, but with an old firmware revision. I guess I got lucky.
but, there are some peculiarities with this card. I have to boot twice everytime I switch off the power on the hdsp external device. on the first boot, hdsploader says that it loads the firmware, but i can only hear something when I reboot again. there is a patch to alsa 9.8 that should fix this though.
hdspmixer will be your friend after you get it started.
and, with the newist PD, I cold only get it all working with jack. starting pd with -alsa flag gives no sound. it did work before though with -alsadev hdsp and the proper .asoundrc file.
also, alsa 9.2 worked perfectly without the hdsploader and that jazz.
be patient with this card, it will eat some nerves if you aren't lucky.
best -august.

I've got 0.9.8 installed; it doesn't "find" the card. 0.9.4 "finds" it OK then crashes the machine when I try to read/write audio. Someone asked on the Alsa list about this a few months ago and I never saw a reply...

Hi all - just saw this - I have an HDSP 9652 - it's working pretty good - let's see if I can help out (conjuring from memory) - sorry if I'm redudant, I haven't read close enough to know what all's being repeated, plus I think I've missed a chunk of the thread...
I had to do two things - first, I had to downgrade the firmware using a Windows machine to - oh crap come on brain, remember - 10 from 11 - oh gosh I think - (I'll copy Mark Knect on this he'll remind me)
then, applied a patch by Thomas C. to the ALSA build - I've been running fine ever since - I believe, also, that said patch is now unneccessary upon upgrading to the latest CVS of ALSA, because Thomas applied it.
What I don't know is whether the firmware downgrade is still necessary, but I think it is - I haven't heard anything about that being fixed
Also, Thomas wrote versions of hdsploader and hdspmixer that work better - with the 9652, only his hdspmixer 1.3 will work, not his hdspmixer 1.1
also good to note is getting the HDSP 9652 to work is a bit different than other very similar hammerfalls, like for example, if you're working with a multiface, or a pcmcia version, or something...the alsa drivers are slowly getting hammered out so this isn't such a pain, so life should improve on this (it may have already)
If anyone needs that patch or help or whatnot, let me know (I'd attach it now, in fact, but I don't have it on this computer) - between me and Mark K. and Thomas C. (who may or may not be very available) I'm sure we can provide more assistance...

OSS will still be included, but ALSA is now the default.
do you know when this kernel (2.5) is released ? I could not find any information about this
2.5 is already released, but is the developer's version. Kernel 2.6 is expected Real Soon Now (tm). 2.6 test versions are already part of Debian unstable.
Kernel-ALSA and the standalone ALSA versions are more or less the same, so I wouldn't expect many differences here, I'm sorry to say.
I saw there are new versions of the ALSA driver too, but I haven't tested them yet (maybe this RME problem was corrected ; I should try installing these new drivers)
Yes, you should. I think there has been some work done in this area. Thomas, are you reading this and can comment on it?
is there anyone on this list who uses a recent Hammerfall dsp sound card under Linux ? when did you buy your card ?
You might want to ask on linux-audio-(dev|user), too.

2.5 will never be released, as it is the development branch of the kernel (note the odd number 5) the next stable kernel will be 2.6 (note the even number 6) and it is almost released: the latest kernel in debian-unstable is 2.6.0-test9. the first release of the new kernel will be 2.6.1

well winfried has written the alsa-drivers for the new hdsp (the one with 64 in/out-channels), and i guess he fixed a lot of bugs with the old drivers. i am not sure, whether they will make it into the frist 2.6-kernel-release.

afaik guenter geiger's oss driver for the rme hammerfall will be included in kernel 2.6, too ... as well as low latency patches ;-)

Hello,

The latest patches (most of them) for the Hammerfall HDSP card was made by Thomas Charbonnel and who did a great work. The most of the patches was related to the mixer interface so that his helpers apps hdspload, hdspmixer and hdspconf (part of the alsa tools) work.
All patches (hopefully) have been applied to alsa-cvs now and therefore will be in 2.6.x next release (since the alsa-kernel tree in the alsa cvs is the part going to the kernel and the alsa-drivers for new applied driver).
Alsa native devices hw:0 ... have only the features the hardware offers, so pd -alsa dont work it is because the pd part has does not use NONINTERLEAVED, 32Bit and so on, but hwplug:x,x should work but will convert in the driver.
jack under linux is known to be the solution, but i also didnt got very stable solution,... Jack knows of hammerfall but is callback and also mixing and so on which is not needed all the time.
