ciao
i'd like to construct a 808- or jomox-like drum-synth in pd. so i'd like to know what every single sound is made of. if anybody is familiar with that and may have some diagrams or schemes of the dsp of such a machine like tr-808, i'm vey interested. maybe this is a secret, but asking doesn't cost :-)
special interest in: claps hihats snares because they seem not to be that easy to create like a bassdrum.
have a look here: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Apr02/articles/synthsecrets0402.asp

Hello,
special interest in: claps hihats snares because they seem not to be that easy to create like a bassdrum.
the secret behind the hihats: the obvius realisation would be a noisegenerator and a hipass filter, but this is it not. They done the typical metallic noise by several heavy detuned square wave oscillators (maybe the actual circuit involved one osc and frequency dividers, would save some parts) mixed together and piped through a bandpass or hipass, its easy to patch in pd to emulate that sound although I didn't have a patch handy right now.

I made some patches a while ago that sound similar, you probably might want to check out csound code by istvan varga -> http://csounds.com/istvan/html/drums.html for some inspiration. If you want my drum patches give me a shout and I'll try to dig them up from /backup/old/backup/old_laptop/copied/backup/stuff ;) (I think I had an excellent cowbell among other things, but then again it actually may sound just crap)

The secret of claps is to multiply bandpass filtered noice with a [phasor~ 100] or so.
You may already know it, but my angriff~ modules is intended especially for drumsounds and it comes with some presets for all the usual stuff. The newer version is part of rradical and called "rrad.angriff~"

Here is a hihat patch that i accidentally made last night (!?), it works using foldover (correct me if i'm wrong) to an almost hilarious extent...it's not exactly physical modelling but it can be made to sound like that great hihat on Bowies Sound And Vision (which has always been a holy grail of mine)...it just needs to be enveloped btw and i included a "suggested" envelope...as i said i made this patch almost by accident so it's kind of weird and irrational (why do i have two hip~'s in a row? it just seems to sound better) - if you do "rationalize" it feel free to send it back to me...
