I cc'ed the list since this is off general interest:
This distro will work fine in -nogui mode. Just specify the -nogui
flag. The next release of this package will include the script /etc/
init.d/pd which helps you run Pd as a background daemon.

Hans,
I was thinking about trying to set up PD as a sound server running under Ubuntu, does the install require a Graphical interface? I have a machine that I have set up without a monitor to run as a server, and would be interested in testing this out.

Hey all,
I am here in Zaragoza, Spain at the gohan workshop. I am impressed by how many people here are running Debian/Ubuntu. It was the most popular OS at the workshop! This also made me realize what a mess that Pd-extended installer was. So here is my first attempt to rectify the situation, I made a .deb. Please test it out:
http://idmi.poly.edu/pdlab/Pd-0.39.2-extended-rc4/Pd-0.39.2-extended- rc4.deb
A couple notes:
- it installs into /usr/local so you can have it installed at the
same time as the "puredata" Debian package
- it should automatically install all dependencies except "liblame0"
since that is not included in normal Debian (AFAIK)
- it should install a GNOME/KDE menu item in "Sound & Video" with a
pretty icon, please tell me if that doesn't work
Anyone know how to handle file associations with GNOME? I would like to add that.

i think it would be interesting to split pd and pd-gui into 2 separate packages (pd recommending pd-gui, pd-gui probably depending on pd (but not necessarily)).
right now, you can run pd with "-nogui", but due to all the dependencies in the package, you will have to install X, tk and so on. (correct me if i am wrong, i haven't checked)

i think, this is a good idea. puredata depends on tk8.4 depends on libx11-6 depends on x11-common etc. so yes, in order to install pd now, the whole x window system is installed.
