hi
i seem to have a problem with gem which has existed before and was caused then (some two years ago; i found something about in the archive) by the nvidia-driver. i've the last nvidia debian (unstable) packages installed and when i destroy a gemwin everything freezes. maybe it's just some simple setting i have to change, i don't know. i have a Geforce 4 MX440 and no problem whatsoever with other programs (e.g. the ut 2004 demo runs quite well).
any ideas?
thx in advance.

hi mik,
are you running pd with -rt ?
i think this is a problem with 'pd -rt' and nvidia drivers. i have freezing windows all the time when i combine the two, both gem and 3dp and even in wvvw.
this only happens when the window in question is dragged.
for me this problem goes away by disabling -rt

yes, i was.

for me too. thx. will it make a big difference, performance-wise? i've always run pd with -rt. will the problem reoccur if i run pd as root? (we'll soon know...)

to answer my own question: it won't.

yes. you will probably get more audio dropouts for the same buffer size.
increasing the buffer size is about the only thing you can do without starting to get creative running 2 pd's, one for audio with -rt and one for video without -rt and audio, communicating using netsend.

it shouldn't depend on being root or not.

not only nvidia drivers, ati fglrx drivers too.
i didn't try yet, but maybe this can be fixed with running X and the window manager as rt processes too. so if you got a big red reset button within arms length...
see here: http://www2.fsmlabs.com/mailing_list/rtl.w5archive/0101/msg00147.html
and use the rt util mentioned or this one: http://zwizwa.fartit.com/pd/tools/setrt-0.1.tar.gz
in the thread a watchdog process is suggested to guard this all a bit.
