hi ive been at pd for a small while now but Ive never looked at the interface side of things, I have a project for and my programme is nearly done, only problem is it looks horrible for a non pd user, Does anyone where I can start looking at how to apply a good interface,as in what objects to start lookinga at?(not graphics like gem) Im talking about just applying colours or making a message box look at bit better?nothing extreme cheers for any help
Hi Adrian,
I might be slightly out of context here but if by chance you know Python and its de-facto gui (Tkinter) you can use the py/pyext module by Thomas Grill, netsend/netreceive for a very simple python/Pd communication and build an interface for your patches in a more user-friendly way.
If you don't know Python, even if it is a very simple yet powerful programming language, it might take a little while before you get a good result though. (but I would encourage you to give it a try, at least for your future projects)
cheers, vincent

The best solution ive come across to create a GUI, that also seperates (could) seperate the pd code from the end user is GrIPD.
http://crca.ucsd.edu/~jsarlo/gripd/
Its very easy to use, and gives a high amount of freedom for creating custom GUI's.
Cheers Anton
Adrian,
a few suggestions:
documentation, I beleive. Frank Barknecht is doing a lot with GoP for his RRADical PD patches, like this one:
http://footils.org/cgi-bin/cms/?show_article=18
Overview of RRAD patches here: http://pure-data.iem.at/community/projects/rradical/patches/
of the GUI objects. An example of this would be my Particle Chamber abstraction:

good luck, d.

this may seem like a dumb question (i did look in the docs..) but how are you setting the bg color of your GoP objects?

You should be able to right click on the object, go to properties and set the color. Depending on which OS, you might even be able to compose your own color.

i think star means the background color of the bounding box of the actual GoP abstraction, that is usually done by just makeing a cavas the same size as the GoP area and putting all your widgets on top of it.

Yeah, sorry. Dumbo alert at the keyboard here! Sounds like the reply after mine gave a big A-HA, though.... ;-)

indeed - a big A-HA on me :) i still *do* have to do lot's of futzing with GoP objects. it initially seemed like adding canvases would bind the GoP objects to canvas size (minimum size, it does...) but i was wrong. oh well. it still makes patches a lot easier on the eyes.

There is a bunch of stuff for using Tcl/Tk widgets, mostly the toxy objects:
http://suita.chopin.edu.pl/~czaja/miXed/externs/toxy.html
Then there is a few objects like [button] and [popup] out there too. I think those two are in the CVS externals collection.

hoi
have a look on j.sarlo's site:
http://crca.ucsd.edu/~jsarlo/gripd/
he created a pd version for using pd as a vst-plug. for this he made Gripd (graphical user interface for pd) check it out.
p.s: to pick up this topic again: joseph sarlo announced pdvsti. i'm still interested. to all: please let me know, when it's released.

I swear it is coming. It basically works, but I still need to iron out some kinks with parameter handling (sysex mess). I had planned to do this during my spring break, but then SEAMUS happened right here in San Diego so I had to go (it's been a good time so far). Anyways, I plan on doing it really soon before I get too busy with school again so stay tuned.
