any ideas? When I tried compiling it it says that it can't find 'asoundlib.h'(something like that I can't remember off the top of my head exacly). Any ideas as to what I can do, I have been using pd and gem with window 98 with a PII but it's really slow, that why I am interested in running them with linux. Thanks for the help,
Compiling fails because you don't have the ALSA sound system installed. You should change the SOUND_ALSA definitions in the makefile to read: SOUND_ALSA=FALSE

Thanks Frank I changed that in the makefile as you suggested, however I am now get this error,
s_main.o(.text+0xa88): undefined reference to `linux_alsa_devno' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [../bin/pd] Error 1
what now? Any ideas?
Cheers, Rory.
(p.s. I didn't realise that i was replying my last email to your own personnle mailbox, sorry bout that!)

That could be a bug in the source code. If that's true, we will have to wait until Miller comes back from his vacation ;-)
But maybe you have some old object files (*.o) from a previous compiler run lying around. Try a "make clean" or maybe a brute force cleaning with "rm -rf pd-0.33*/"

Wait, wait, ...
First, by pd-0.33 does *not* include alsa support by default, so there is something wrong from the beginning. The tar.gz archive you should have is called "pd-033PATCH1-linux.tar.gz". If you have another one, get this from Millers site under "Pd version 0.33PATCH1 for linux (1.2 Megabytes)".
Changing makefiles should not be necessary, as you can do everything with the "configure script"
Compiling for OSS should be as easy as: #> cd src #> ./configure #> make
and finally to install, as "root":
#> make install
If that doesn't work, send the output of the configure script and the make step together with the bug report to the list ....
Guenter
the iemlib release 1.10 for pd0.33patch1 (only for linux) is temporary available under new address:
readme-file: "http://iem.kug.ac.at/~musil/iemlib/README"

hi /
having problems compiling pd 0.33 under SuSE Linux 7.1 gets error "C compiler cannot create executables" immediately after ./configure !! i think alfonso acosta had problems under SuSE also. any help appreciated as i think i want to give this OS-on-a-cd business a run for it's distro ; )
thanks / de|
Hi,
This indicates that you either don't have a compiler installed, or your development setup is severly broken. You could send me the "config.log" file, as that should indicate what was going wrong.

thanks guenter,
you were right. on close inspection i found my compiler [gcc] was broken - though nothing in the logs seemed to suggest it was. after reinstalling it compiles fine.

Doing "make clean" should fix this.

Thanks for the help guys, I tried download again and running the instructions that Guenter gave me, that sorted it all out, easy when u know how! I never ran the './configure' command before I tried to 'make' the compilation so I guess that was the problem form the start. So with pd running I tried to get gem to run however when I run the 'install.sh' file from the gem directory it says that it cannot create the directories, here what is displayed,
[root@localhost gem]# ls
GEM.LICENSE.TERMS GEM_INSTALL.sh GnuGPL.LICENSE
examples
GEM.README Gem.pd_irix5 doc
help
[root@localhost gem]# ./GEM_INSTALL.sh

I'm sure that it is something simple but as an iliterate linux user I'm stumped! Thanks again for the help regarding pd and hopefully I will get this sorted out soon aswell!
Cheers, Rory.
