Hey,
Finally, the Windows builds are working again. I am interested to
hear about how the GUI changes work on Windows...

If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of
exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an
idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps
it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into
the possession of everyone, and the receiver cannot dispossess
himself of it. - Thomas Jefferson

I will try it this week and report back...I have a Windows machine at home now!

All objects except the iemguis are invisible. (WindowsXP) The Edit menu on the main window has a tiny grayed out font. All other menus look OK.

This can be related to some things:
the update queue mechanism introduced in 0.38 isn't working anymore so the queue just builds up without flushing or the queue just doesn't ever build up.
every non-GOP patch gets treated like a GOP drawn in itself. If the floatboxes (Ctrl+3) don't get drawn, it's probably not the problem.
new patch colouring mechanism happens to draw white-on-white (I haven't looked at how it works, so I don't know whether it's possible that this happens)
Tcl commands are erring, and the errancies are redirected to some kind of /dev/null by Windows or by the custom Wish Shell used by Pd.

If you turn on "-d 1" you can see everything is getting created.
It's all there on the patch, too, you can highlight it, interact with
it, etc. It is just all being drawn in white-on-white... Hmm...

Very strange that it works fine on Mac OS X and Ubuntu, but not
Windows. I just did some more testing on Mac OS X. It looks like Tk
is not actually drawing to the canvas, since I can change the
background color of the canvas, but I don't see anything drawn.
Any ideas?

has been loaded into the global namespace.

I will. that's true, but the desirable behaviour for a program that

ok. but maybe it might be nice to replace it with something in "english".
it's nicer to users that don't care about those details.

i don't agree. i think, if there are messages printed to console at all, they should be very accurate and use accurate terms. Otherwise more experienced people would have to translate every message back.
i don't like the idea of making things appear simple, if they are not. i still consider pd to be a programming language and in order to deal with a programming language, you need to use adequate terminology. i think it helps everyone and causes confusion less likely (also for beginners), if terminology is consistent.
after all, you don't have to care about messages, that are _not_ errors.

my problem was that I couldn't say if that was an error or not. I couldn't
say anything at all about it, in fact. in the previous version I
understood what it was about.

i think, if you see an error message in the pd-window that is not prepended by 'error: ' you can call it a bug.

It makes me think of those Microsoft components that talk about "resources" when they mean "RAM". They especially don't mean "resources" in general, because it would include lots more than just RAM, and you couldn't add all resources together in a way meaningful enough to get a percentage-of-use out of it. So this is an example of condescending terminology destined to keep users in ignorance and confusion and make techies look like aliens because They Don't Use The Same Words As MicroSoft Does. (I can't believe that it was an accident or a simple mistake...)
OTOH, "core dumps" are not much more meaningful as a word, but at least they have historical justification. Unfortunately for the "core dump" expression, "magnetic core RAM" fell in disuse shortly before I was born, being replaced by "semiconductor RAM" instead... first by 128-byte chips, then 1024, 4096, 16384, ... and nowadays, a piece of RAM may hold 1073741824 bytes (one gig), but still, Linux, in the long tradition of UNIX passed from generation to generation, says things like:
Segmentation Fault (core dumped)

The canvas-local namespace is a path for finding objects. I think as
of 0.40.2, once binary DLLs are loaded, those symbols are in a global
namespace.

WinXP: Changing the background of the canvas (edit pd.tk line 82: set canvas_fill #FF7F00) doesn't make the object visible. Also I can make a line appear when I move to join two toggles for instance, but the input of the second toggle won't accept the line.

Maybe it accepts the line while making it disappear. It has to do with how that line is drawn: usually, the visual line you drag is deleted when the internal connection is made, and then it is redrawn using the same code that draws lines when opening a patch.
With all that has been said, what looks broken is the procedure for triggering redraws. You can figure out whether it is it, or an untrapped tcl/tk problem, by inserting fprintf(stderr,...) in the draw-methods to see whether they are called or not.
