I connected up to 16 Joysticks via 2 D-link USB hubs in cascade with and with an USB/ethernet/USB estension to reach 50m cable length. Adding 3m USB extension between Joysticks and hub and 5m USB extension between 1st and 2nd USB hub, and, against my expectations it worked fine!
(all tha data is collected with maxMSP's hi, and i didn't check latency and i must admit that this is no hard real time but OK to play some music with 20 people and that's all is was about :-)

According to spec, 10BaseT has a maximum cable length of 100m. USB 1.0 spec says 5m. I've used 100BaseT on cables well over 100m, so that spec is quite conservative. I've heard about people having quite a few troubles trying to get USB up to 20m.
Plus you can get a 300m spool of CAT5 for US$40. Ethernet is really far better than USB if you want to go for long cable lengths.
Here's a few USB extension solutions, but they are expensive: http://www.usbgear.com/USB-Extenders.html http://www.everythingusb.com/hardware/USB_distance_extension/ http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=201&sku=29341 http://www.icron.com/products/usb/usb_products.php -- Marc

yes, its true that usb cant extend that long with just a cable, also, the maximum length is _very_ dependant on the connected device. here i have a 5 meter cable, no problems. also, usb hubs are really cheap.... but for sure, adding hubs adds latency as well .....

thats right. im just curious about the latency i can get, but we will see....

Wow, that's a crazy setup. Do you have any documentation of it?
