Hey,
Sorry, just want to praise Jitter a bit. Tried the demo today. Great stuff! Everyone who haven't tried it yet, go to www.cycling74.com and download it. Try it. Then hand over that rectangular piece of plastic you keep in your pocket.
Great list. Thanks for a lot of good info!
PS. Jitter is the video add-on-part of MaxMSP.
Yours cincerely,

Hi,
I managed to run PD (version 0.36-0) on a Toshiba Satellite 100CS,=20 which is a laptop PC. Main specs :
- Pentium I (75 Mhz)
- 810 MB Hard Disk
- 8 MB RAM
- Windows 95 Since it doesn't have any multimedia card, I could only test
control=20 stuff (actually, a metro and a bang). With a PCMCIA ethernet card I=20 have, I could also test a netsend/netreceive connection with my current=20 laptop (which has audio/midi capabilies). It works. I see two=20 configurations for which it could be usefull :
- for people who want to learn basics of control/programming approach
in = PD.
- for a remote/shared control (via the network) of a "normal"
multimedia = PD.
Just my 2 euro cents,

I think it should be good practice everywhere users upload something, to try to download it once afterwards. Then the user would've seen that something must have gone wrong.
here, here... I have just had this problem with the syncgrain~ external I was whinging about all last week. The ~ was missing in the .dll file I downloaded (from www.audionerd.com) and therefore wasn't working. I know this is undoubtedly very obvious to more seasoned pders but for someone still cluelessly weaning themselves off commercial software it's not; even if it were, mucking about with files that one assumes to be 'in order' is normally not advisable as the chances of wreaking even more havoc are high... The 'download once test' would save a lot of hair-tearing and would probably also result in less people like myself clogging up the mailing list with irratating questions!

Not really. Do you get those messages from my attached patch or from another one?
From the attached patch. However, it does not happen all the time, and so
far
I haven't found a sequence that reliably reproduces the problem.
First question, which would pre-empt the rest of this message: are there
any
bug fixes between 0.36-devel and 0.37 that I'm missing that could relate
to
this?
There have been some changes in the threading model that could have an influence. To see if the threading is buggy you could try to remove all the detach flags (maybe it's best to do that in the patcher text file) and try again.
Next, I haven't looked at the source yet to see what generates this
message.
You will have hard times to debug the VASP source if you're not familiar with it
The only corelation I suspect (and I could be easily be wrong about this,
it's
just a vague suspicion), is that this is somehow an indirect artifact of
the
current TK bug (where you get a message about "bad screen distances", sometimes followed by "illegal command name", when loading a patch or
moving
a graph). However I can't imagine what the connection might be, and I
suspect
it could be just a coincidence.
I don't think it's related to that - it looks like a genuine VASP bug.
best greetings, Thomas

Hi Chris, does this mean that you can't create any vasp object? ( i assume the vasp library does load normally)
The combination of linux and PPC is completely untested, but _should_ nevertheless work. I'll see what could go wrong but i'm not sure if i have a solution shortly.

It would be helpful if you could list the vasp objects that don't load. The problem with the pd_ex examples is that they are quite complex, so a error could be hidden anywhere. Maybe you could construct a simple patch that segfaults?

hi adrian,
I read:
but I manage to send text characters, numbers or whatever to other IP addresses using 'send' in a message box and joining it to sendOSC but how do you send sound,
OSC is a control protocol not meant for streaming sound data in a reasonable amount of time (though you could of course use:
[tabread] | [pd yourOSCsender] . . (imagine powerpoint internet cloud here) . [pd yourOSCreceiver] | [tabwrite]
)
I've a little osc~ set up where I can hear my own sound on my pc but I dont know what the object or message is to send it to another IP
well in pd you could always look into the pd internal messages docs and clone your patch at the other end but I don't think that's what you want. again: OSC != streaming it was designed as a more versatile, contemporary, typed, urlstyle , physical layer independent midi replacement see: http://www.cnmat.berkeley.edu/OpenSoundControl/

if you really wan't to stream audio you should take a look at the various *mp3*, *ogg*cast, *shout*cast externals but I'm no expert on that.

ok great, finally I think I have sort of a clue what you want to do, so your options are:
netsend - netreceive but you'll have to develop your own mini protocol defining what is what.
OSC - just stick an OSC header and receiver to to the beginning of your midi message send it, parse it at the other end route it to the instrument you want et voila
I just thought Id try getting it working with the osc~
still don't get it
I give up,

Hi,
I'm trying to read text from textfiles in pd and display sentences with = the text object in gem. However, I am having a few problems.=20
I'm reading sentences with textefile, which works well. I read lines in = the textfile one by one, which I want to send as lists to the text3d = object. What comes out of the textfile object is something like:
"list the dog is asleep"
which I need to convert to:
"text the dog is asleep"
How do I do that in pd?
Two corollary questions:
- is there an escape character that can be used in the message
object, = or otherwise a way to store the "space" character in a text object as a = list element?
- is there a way to count the number of elements in a list?
Thanks!

no escaping (yet?) but you can use [l2s] from zexy. i hate to keep pointing at zexy, but (for obvious reasons) it has everything i need and what is missing in pd.
- is there a way to count the number of elements in a list?
[length] from (guess) zexy

i just noticed, that someone has already done this (at least in the cvs) but my research wasn't for nothing: i have removed a constraint which denied the rendering of lists that started with a number. don't know why it was there.
