The existing build system is definitly ugly but it does work on many systems as long as you have all the deps installed. If you want to work with libs direcly, then use those build systems directly.
If you want to improve gentoo support, the best way right now would be to package the template library, then it'll be really easy to package/build all the libs that are based on that template. Its a clean, well-tested standalone approach, and that's where pd-extended is headed.
