Most USB 1.1 cards just work plug and play. Stay away from USB 2 cards (not many available yet anyway) and (older) M-Audio cards like the Quattro.
Some popular choices are the devices by Edirol or the Terratec Phase 26, that I personally use.

Jaime: some card m audio are compatible in gnu/linux, i use m audio pre mobile and works fine... Best Regards from Chile

Hello, I have a Tapco Link.usb, It works very fine with alsa without specific stuff. Test with standaard distribution Archlinux, debian and Ubuntu

Are you using Pd directly on that card like "pd -alsa"? I remember the Tapco Link being a 24 bit only card and Pd did have some problems with that in the past. Maybe it's fixed now? Anyway jack should always work.
