Does anyone know if Google is going to run the Summer of Code program
again? If so, I'll happily setup the "mentoring organization" part
of it.

i'm curious, what would be the projects that you'd propose? how should it be integrated into the development process of pd?

That would depend on who was interested. There is plenty to do,
that's for sure. The whole reason I would do this is to make sure
that it would get integrated in.

I'm interested - but I have to think about what exactly ... ;)

Its not a sure thing that they'll run it again, so we'll just have to
wait and see...

it runs again: http://code.google.com/soc/
<cite> How does a mentoring organization apply?
The organization should choose a single administrator to submit its application via the GSoC web app between March 5-12, 2007. </cite> from http://code.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=60302&topic=10727
so it's quite soon ...
any suggestions for projects ?

GÃŒnter mentioned updating PDa to the latest version of Pd to me once. I would love to see that happen, and it sounds like ideal work for a student to me. Hopefully they could contribute patches back to Miller that make it possible to build regular Pd with no floats, on multiple platforms including embedded devices.
Best,
Chris.

well, if you're planning to work on the pd core, i guess, it would be a good idea to contact miller in order to see, which projects he would include and which projects he would reject. imo, it would be a bad idea to spent the summer coding and in the end miller rejects the patch ...

If google was good for searching sounds you'd be able to give it a url for a sound and have it return as many as it can find like it, as you get with Freesound and sites that try and match spectrograms. Is that the idea?
I guess having stringy things helps a lot now. Wonder if anyone ever written a webserver in Pd? Or something like pd mod-perl module or pd python module for Apache, that would be fun, to make pd behave as a web application component for data views/representation, say you wanted to browse the spectrographs of a fat directory of data files. I did it clumsily by calling XGraph through [shell] and passing it a list of floats from a flatfile. A pd only patch that returns some pretty pictures of data to a web browser would be quite cute. Or can the summer of code thing just be about any stuff you like and not limited to web programming?

It can be about anything.

http://r23.cc/interface/ is a very nice example of audio streaming with server-side Pd. The Google SOC can be about anything, but Pd has these very good advantages over other dataflow languages :
The project could be about patches or externals. It could be focussed on the server-side usages of Pd. One could also use ffmpeg (see http://blog.go4teams.com/?p=56 ) or any other conversion tool on the server-side as well.
with server-side Pd. The Google SOC can be about anything, but Pd has these very good advantages over other dataflow languages :
- can be used with no GUI (server-side)
you're joking? before i submitted pd to the dataflow category in dmoz, everythign there was some kind of programming language that you could _definitely_ use without a GUI..
and in the sense that the patches define a signal/message graph. SC and Chuck tear it to shreds on no-gui..
of course, this could be a good subject for the summer of code..

hum, there is an update on this, the new map component is there : http://gollum.artefacte.org/mapuse/map.html
the map itself is not pd, but some emitters ( radios ) use pd patches to link this to a netjuke database that enables to make playlist and programation.
so, r23 itself uses pd, but the global infrastructure ( http://giss.tv ) allows to use any software to stream ( Muse, IceS, libshout, ... )

well, i guess it needs some open discussion among the pd developers, and especially with miller about what projects he would accept or not.
i mean, it's probably useless to have someone work on something like simd optimization, the scheduler or xlet tooltips, if miller is not going to accept the code.
so, i'd definitely like to hear, what miller thinks of this ...

maybe it whouldnt be so pd specific. is there any sort of 'technology in arts' mentoring group for SoC? last i checked it was mainly projects used in Ubuntu..

How about stuff from the do-list section of src/notes.txt? Would seem like a sensible place to start, and most likely to get accepted by Miller. There is a crapload of stuff in there.
