Hi:
Foolishly, I upgraded my perfectly configured workstation from Fedora 5 to Fedora 9. Since then I've been struggling to regain my position.
I was happily using my Edirol UA-25 under ALSA with Pd, but now that doesn't work. It gives a perplexing error message. Perhaps someone has seen it. Thanks for looking.
Best, David
[david@Congo pd]$ pd -alsa -listdev -nogui oops: ALSA cards not reported in order? audio input devices:
audio output devices:
API number 1
no midi input devices found no midi output devices found oops: ALSA cards not reported in order?
When I try to switch to UA-25 (plug-in), I get the following error messages:
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1240:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card snd_pcm_open (input): No such file or directory ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1240:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card snd_pcm_open (output): No such file or directory
However,
aplay -v -D plughw:UA25 foo.wav
works fine.
Also, ALSA works with the NVidia card in Pd.
System Configuration:
Pd version 0.41.4

Sorry for responding to my own message. Here's some interesting news: on Fedora 9 Edirol UA-25 works with OSS in Pd even in Advance mode. After rebooting, it came up as the first device in /proc/asound/cards. It was quite by accident that I tried the combination of listening to the output of the ua-25 while using Pd/OSS. Midi still seems to require alsamidi, though.

yes i'm just laughing at people saying : 'oh you use OSS', for on my 3 months old laptop, it's what works the best with a : 00:07.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP67 High Definition Audio (rev a1)
so what ? alsa is so cryptic also why can't they create a /dev/dsp? that would be it, no more blurring, right?

Hi Yves,
What about when you have multiple sound cards? What about when you want to output sound from more than one program simultaneously? What about when you want full duplex? What about when you need thread safety?
Did you know aobut alsa-oss compatability layer?
/dev/dsp is a nice and simple approach, sure.
Best,
Chris.

ola,
i was just saying 'don't laugh too easily at OSS, and repeat that it's deprecated like it's written in wikipedia, because in my case, it's just wrong'
i also have the edirol fa-101 that works with freebob, so i'm not eliminating any possibility for drivers.
now in the Gijon Summercamp, you can get stream on : http://giss.tv:8000/summercampTV.ogg
