***another question I have is: if I get a message in the console when a plugin instantiates such as
verbose( 1):plugin~: plugin ports: audio 1/1 ctrl 1/0
what is the correct nomenclature to use to control a plugin when using [plugin~] in a patch?

i'm not sure whether i understand your question. the output means, that the plugin has 1 audio input, 1 audio output, 1 control input and 0 control outputs.
it doesn't say anything about how to use the control. this can be queried via "info" (if this doesn't crash)
