so with mike's help ("Re: [PD] a few beginner's questions") i sorted out the "couldn't create" trouble. also, i figured out the coll file stuff, i've got it all mapped properly, it seems. only: no sound.
warning: 9-zample: multiply defined
and that line times 4. i'm a bit scared of just diving into the patch & subpatches and start changing things around, so if anyone has a tip, i'd be most grateful.
cheers, robbert

Hello, you've certainly duplicated a table called 9-zample, try "Find" to find and erase the three erroneous clones. Patco.

thanks for that. it's disappeared already. i guess i should only post once i've tried everything and i'm totally desperate. or go to the forum ;) but i was, really. no idea why it sometimes does things it then just stops doing after a while. oh the mystery...
not that i have any sound now, though. does anyone know whether derek holzer's ex-sampler (suggested setup in the helpfile) works like it is or whether i have to change things in it? i've set it up now as suggested in the help file, but nothing's happening.

Hi Robbert,
Samplemapper works when you have a "client player" that is constructed to use it. In the [ex-sampler] abstraction included, open up the [pd main_selector] subpatch. Inside there you will see the mechanism which outputs two things: a "$1-zample" message which you can use to tell [tabread4~] which of the tables to read, and the length of the sound in samples, which you can use to control playback.
On my OSX system, which is the standard "PD-0.39.2-extended-test4" installer from HC, everything creates and plays fine. Do you get sound normally? Are you selecting a sample for [ex-sampler] to play? Is the gain turned up? Did you click the toggle above the player to start playback? It's really quite simple, almost bulletproof, so I can't imagine how it couldn't work unless you are still having trouble creating objects...
best, d.

that's set by the [samplemapper], isn't it? isn't this related to the coll .txt? or do i have to specify things there myself?
and the length of the sound in samples, which you can use to control playback.
given by the zample-size in [pd selector], isn't it? if i'm correct, these things are specified as soon as i load my samples into the [samplemapper]? i do get sound (test with [osc~], toggle and gain are as they should be. i still sometimes get the message that (x)-zample is multiply defined. also, i once had succes in getting the sounds to play back: by selecting them, and than banging them by clicking the toggle to on. just sending the number value (of course with toggle value 1) didn't do anything. after closing and reopening the patch, without changing anything, the toggle didn't do anything anymore either: no sound at all, while [osc~] always works. i don't have time to keep trying right now, i'll let you know when i figure out more. if you have any ideas, i'd love to hear. cheers, robbert
