Just to follow-up. The same load_object error appears after I've recompiled zexy into individual objects.

The error seems to be extraneous. It works for me. The other thing
to consider is making them called [lt~] and [gt~] and bypass the
hexloader.
Personally, I'd like to see the possibility of a generic setup() setup
function, then you wouldn't need the hexloader to have >~.pd_linux or
~.pd_darwin, just >~.dll would need it. Max/MSP externals all use a
function called main(), so its doable.
