This sounds super interesting.
Id be down, im in NYC.... and I know share (the event in NYC) would
love some hardware to set up an open source media station for randoms
to use.. It would be great to get some donations... works out nice.
I used to go to the MIT Fleamarket that happened from spring ->
fall , every other saturday, in Boston iirc. That was an AWESOME
place to meet people and find old stuff..
Id love to see something like that in NYC.
hmmm... :)

Thought I'd throw this out to PD'ers in the NYC area, or anyone really:
I've been having great luck (for my purposes) finding computers and parts on the streets of New York, and have even been doing some informal trading with some of the other street scavengers.
I got a mailing from the Department of Sanitation advertising their recycling day at Union Square, October 16th, I think. Has anyone been to one of these as a source of hardware or talked to the Dept. about getting a crack at their stuff for group projects? Or whatever?
How about a PD demo table?
curious,

Hey vade-
My guess is that the Department of Sanitation might be uncooperative if someone was just to come up to them and ask to poke thru whatever they had collected.
This is where an (ahem!) bona fide organization might be of advantage. I think I have some contacts with Sanitation that might be of some use.
This doesn't rule out the idea that someone could get to the individuals that come to recycle before they get in Sanitation's hands...
Anyway, might be an nice time to get together and meet with screw drivers and IC pullers...

Well, Share is infact a real organization, under NYFA non-
profitcoverage.. ill forward this info over to the share admin list,
and maybe we can pull something together.
ICs? Screwdrivers, Pliers? what are those :D :D
There is also a Materials for the Arts thing, but I dont know too
much about that. They sometimes have old machines to play with.

(I had a feeling...) Anyway, maybe Share should contact the Bloomberg administration and throw down with the City's Strongest? ;)
I have an idea about who to go through, but I'll share it offlist...

I am in, sounds good. Dynebolic would be a great Pd demo platform for
scavenged computers. I have about 15 scavenged PCs myself, ranging
from PII 450 to PIII 700. I am also part of Madagascar Institute,
which is an arts non-profit which has done 'official' recycling
activities. I'd love to do a project to showcase what you can do with
Pd and abandoned computers.
My experience with Materials for the Arts is that their computer gear
selection is small and not so good, but its the luck of the draw there.
