I’ve been working trying to fix a Puredata patch that uses MIDI input from an external device to control playback of 2 movies that are displayed in a single GEM window. I have been able to get the patch working properly on my own computer (a 2.53GHz MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.3) but can’t get it to work on the computer where the patch needs to run (a 1.66GHz MacMini with OSX 10.5).
I’ve read through the forums and archives and based on the input I have created several version of the patch (all of them have crashed on the MacMini). I couldn’t find any instance of a bug report documenting this issue so I decided to add it here.
I’ve posted my code, two different approaches each with the associated full crash reports. In the first approach I use two separate Gemheads to control the movies; in the second approach I use a single Gemhead to control both movies.
Please note that the download is quite large (100MB). The reason being, I have included videos in the zip files so that the application can run properly. One more important note, you need to install pdmtl in order to run the patch (as I use one of their abstractions in my patches).

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Hi there,
you should mention the version of Pd and Gem you are running, and make the effort to narrow it down a little bit. What elements cause the crash in the patch? Does it happen straigt away, on loading, after a few days, with or without the PdMtl abs, MIDI... Is the mac mini a PPC machine? is upgrading to 10.6 an option you could try (with booting from an FW drive with a system on it if you wanna try first)... Anyways, it runs fine here, but i have the same specs as your laptop. I doubt it has anything to do with pix_movie over pix_film.

In your home folder there is a Library folder which contains a subfolder with crash logs. There will be one for Pd in there which you can zip and post to the list. That will show exactly where the crash occurs.
On OSX most of the pix_film crashes come from 3rd party codecs installed like Perian or Divx.

All, thank you very much for your quick replies.
I will play around with the codec to see if that improves the performance. In regards to trying pix_movie, my initial attempts were not successful but I will try again an save the crash reports next time.
I'm attaching a few crash reports from the last two weeks.
Here is a brief description of the issue. When running on the mac mini (full spec details in the attachment), this patch will work for about 5 - 20 minutes then it crashes. The crash often happens all by itself (e.g. no input is being processed by the patch at the time of the crash). What happens is that the video in the gem window stops running, the audio stops as well, and I am have to force quit out of PD.
Let me know if these additional details are helpful. I'll be on location again on Wednesday to test out your recommendations.
Thanks again, Julio.

The video you are playing is a kind of input in some manner (though it's also useful to know that you're not having any other input than that).
First, check out the Load Meter patch (in the Media menu) and make sure that the number doesn't increase over time. (though usually, it wouldn't make the sound disappear suddenly)
Then, there's a system programme that allows you to check how much RAM the programmes (.app and others) are using. PureData is represented by two entries. Make sure that there isn't one that inflates like crazy over time. Also make sure the CPU doesn't grow over time (Load Meter only reports one of the CPU values and doesn't tell you about the other entry).
Then later, check whether it makes a difference whether the result of [pix_film] is used at all : try disconnecting [pix_texture] but keep [gemhead] active.
If you still don't find a difference, try the [pix_film] test with a reencoding of your video file in a different codec.
Do you use [vline~] at all, in your audio part ?

Mathieu, thanks for all the tips. I will try these out later this week on site.
In regards to your question about vline~, I was currently just using the line object to turn up and down the clip volume.
All the best, Julio

Unfortunately, those crash logs don't help much as the crash comes inside a very basic Quicktime function. Maybe it is a QT bug.

Here are some updates regarding my attempts to solve the issue with my pix_film patch.
Last week, I was able to get the patch running when I made the following key change: (1) I reconverted the movie files so that they were smaller in size (the original quicktime file were approximately 300MB each, now they are 15 to 20MB each) (2) I stopped using the pdp_yqt to play the sound (I actually focused on getting the patch to run without sound)
This made it so that they patch was working without sound playback. Unfortunately, when I attempted to add sound back in using a readsf~ object then the patch started to crash again. This means that the current issue is no longer related to the the pix_film object.
My plan is to re-install Puredata on to the computer in question to make sure that the issue is not related to my specific install of Pd.
Thanks, Julio
p.s. - to Chris, thanks for pointing out that this issue seems to be coming from a quicktime function - this makes sense considering that when I reconverted the videos they seemed to wor.
