Thanks for the info about netreceive and pipeio~, I hacked u_pdsend.c into my application and it works great.
I'd like to run pure-data and freebirth on my machine at the same time.
To let them both access the sound card, I've tried using enlightenment
sound daemon, but pure-data doesn't work with the daemon.
Is there another daemon that might work or another way to get this functionality?
Thanks again. -James
you can try it with alsa drivers, i can use several audio applications with a soundblaster live and alsa. also you can try jack as audio server [1]. if you are using redhat, you can find it (and freebirth) at Planet CCRMA [2]. there is also a description how to use freebirth with jack.

The problem with using libjackasyn and freebirth is that the graphics update do not seem to work correctly.
So in order to use it you have to recompile freebirth with libjackasyn (I put them on http://devel.demudi.org/download/)
The cool thing about using it with jack is that you can hook up all sorts of pd effects to freebirth.
Greetings,
Guenter

Yes, that's cool. At the LAD conference, I did a short presentation of Pd (sorry, no recordings of that available) where I showed how to control two alsaplayer instances with Pd using the apctl externals. Because of lack of time I didn't show how to route both alsaplayer's through Pd with Jack, but I already tried it and it works great. Using pd with 4-channel output on my Quattro, one can also choose one pair of outputs for prelistening on headphones and control volumes and what plays on which output with Pd.
It's like a selfmade NI Traktor.
I'll clean up this patches a bit and send them to Chris (apctl author) as example patches.

great, I could also send you my half baked dj console (with equalizer, pan and stuff based on k_jackd~ since jack doesn't like my fake multichannel setup with 2 cards - but pd doesn't care ;)
cheers,
x
Do you just go directly out the four outputs fro pd, or do you have to set anything up to use the quattro, I'm using one, but my regular mixer programs don't work.

The Quattro has no mixer.

Jack is the only sound daemon doing musically useful things on Linux. Pd supports Jack in the cvs-version, I don't know about freebirth.

Oh, I forgot, that ALSA itself can do the mixing of multiple streams now (in 0.9.1) with the dmix plugin.
