Indeed I had been looking at the reference folder and opening all the help-anything.pd files that I didn't know, but for some reason I missed the "list" one (maybe I thought I knew it, or I thought lists wouldn't do).

It doesn't matter if it's a list or not, you can still use [list] to turn it into a list, do a pre-pending or pre-unpending and then use [list trim] to turn it back into a message.
