i'm just trying it. with pd~ help patch, clicking on [pd~ start pd~-subprocess.pd< i've got an error : error: pd~: can't stat /usr/local/lib/pd/bin/pd

Hmm, this will take me some time to fix correctly - it looks like there's no way for an extern to find the pd executable itself. d'oh...

If there was a global sys_pdexe that was set up at the same time as
sys_libdir and sys_guidir, that would work. It would just need to
have the platform specific info in it. Isn't that already happening
somewhere? I forget where...
I'll bet there has to be other ways too, perhaps through a shared
library lookup mechanism, like querying which program loaded the .so.

I'm thinking the sys_pdexe is teh only way. I try to avoid adding junk to the Pd API but in this case I think it will be necessary.
