a very late reply here... but when you say "support for other audio APIs" does this mean that its now possible to add support to make PD a VST or Jack client?

There are several usability improvements. The audio and MIDI systems are now more modular, which should make it easier to merge in support for other audio APIs. For Windows and Linux I'm now using portaudio v19, and for mac OSX still v18.
Jack should be easy (but not for me since I'm not running it.) As to VST, it's a bit more complicated, since it requires setting up Pd to operate as a call-back from the VST host. Joe Sarlo has done this to Pd 0.35 but it required major hackery, and he and I are still talking about how to do it more cleanly...
cheers Miller
