Hallo list!
I have to use 4 800x600 projectors with 4 channel sound for an installation, so I wanted to ask if someone can share some experiences which hardware we should buy ...
the organizers suggested the following: athlon64, 1.8ghz 1gb ram 2x matrox g200 dualhead pci. (1 or 2 computers)
course) ?
images and text ...), so I am just thinking about, how to use 4 projectors:
GEM window over all 2 heads
over all 4 heads ?
avoid the experimtental multiple gemwin feature ...)
google and found an (old) article, there it was said, that it's not possible to use DRI with 2 screens on linux ... or could someone suggest an other card?
Thanks a lot for any suggestion, LG Georg
Hi Georg,
I have an AMD64 machine running debian with similar specs (AMD 3200).
First thing is what are you specifically doing in Gem? If your doing lots of graphics and not much video then you need a better graphics card that does openGL very well, matrox is not known for this. I have a Matrox QID on a windows box at work and it behaves quite badly. :( but it certainly could be buggy drivers as apposed to bad HW.
Anyhow I have an nvidia N6600 which is blowing me away so far. It is dual head (1x VGA, 1xDVI and 1x svideo) and I'm runing it on two screens 0.1 and 0.0. You should be able to share one gemwin on both screens using the normal "streched" nvidia driver mode.
I have a RAID setup on my machine with dual SATA. I'll be soon doing a test of disk access using a single 13GB video clip, and using crazy random access inside it. I'll let you all know how well it works!
The biggest issue I have with this machine is that there seems to be some bugs with amd64 and SSE. Frank and my machine both crash a test patch using pyext compiled with SSE. :( I still can't get around it.
the commercial nvidia drivers work very well and are fully functional (same features as the windows drivers).
Good luck.

Hallo!
First thanks for all answers!
First thing is what are you specifically doing in Gem?
images are displayed at the screen (9 images on one screen - and they change all the time - I think I'll use pix_buffer because I need a certain set of images in a certain time) and some text ...

thanks - the problem is only, that I think this card will be a little bit too expensiv (would need 2 of them ...)

good to know - I also will use pyext, so no sse ...

generating or playback?) in high quality. limiting to one pc can save you headaches and might be cheaper at this time - unlike a few years when bying a couple of duron's was a good cheap option.

do you mean it's even not possible on "only" 2 screens ?
Question regarding the grafic card: of course ati radeon and nvidia seem to be the best solution - but expensive has anyone experience with e.g. Matrox G450 Dualhead (they seem to have good linux support) - dri on both screens ?
1 vs. 2 computer: so I think it won't be possible with 1 computer and 4 screens ?
Thanks again, LG Georg

Any 100 Euro Nvidia card will be more than adequate for what you want to do. I suspect the Matrox will be entirely inappropriate for GEM.

You would have to either do Nvidia's SLI, which is very expensive, or resort to PCI cards which are much slower for texturing. 2 Computers each with a dual head AGP card is probably the way to go. I have done lots of sync between multiple machines using OSC and it works pretty well. I can usually have multiple machines play the same movie and each display part of the frame or move the image between the three with very good sync.

almost all (? probably all) "modern" nvidia cards (>= fx) will have 2 VGA-outputs, and they cost very little. (~70€, guess you can get one for 50 too)

just use nvidia's "TwinView" to drive a xinerama-like dual-head screen with hw-acceleration on both.

even if matrox has "dri" support, this is (to my experience) nothing you can compare with nvidia's (and probably radeon's) acceleration.
with _wild_ numbers i'd say: software-GL: 1x matrox-DRI : 3x nvidia-GL : 50x (well, probably 10x or 20x)
1 vs. 2 computer: so I think it won't be possible with 1 computer and 4 screens ?
well, there are mainboards with 2 AGP-slots (are there ?) or you can use 1 AGP and 1 PCI card (like chris has mentioned, PCI is not that fast with texture uploading) i think you would have to use 2 X-servers on your machine and then run 2 instances of pd/gem

I tryed this and it works great. (display the same scene on both computer, and using the perspec message to gemwin to change to viewing properties)

I don't think you'll be able to have DRI on a window crossing 2 craphic card.

avoid the experimtental multiple gemwin feature ...)
if you can se up dri on 4 screen, then it's the same solution as 1.

if you use them with xinerama you can't have dri, but at least with ATI propietary driver you can choose BigDesktop option, that creates for you just one windows, and you can have DRI on it... it works for me with just one dual head at least, giving me dri on both outputs.
