Hi all,
I've seen a lot of discussion recently on the list regarding which webcam to use but none of the recommendations seem feasible. They are either discontinued hard-to-find products or they simply don't work. For this reason, I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation which webcam to get for Linux if I want a balance between fps, resolution, and stability. I also read about IP cameras but am not sure if these can be interfaces with gem.
Any help is most appreciated!

Hi, I had a good experience with the Logitech QuickCam for Notebooks Deluxe. Logitech QuickCam in general are a good suggestion. I had success with firewire as well, which allows more flexibility, of course.

Thanks for the reply. Regarding fw solutions, I do have ADVC but that one eats my CPU like crazy. Are there any fw solutions which are less CPU greedy? Also regarding wireless/ip cameras, can those be interfaced with PD?

Hi there,
I have two Logitech Quickcam IM working fine @25fps in 640x480 connected at the same time with Gem on Debian, driver is called spca5xx from http://mxhaard.free.fr , loaded as a module thanks to the module-assistant.
About IP cameras: the Axis PTZ 214 has a built-in linux server streaming out both in RTSP & http, Photo-jpeg or MPEG4 streams. Lots of docs available. I havent streamed into PD yet , but should be feasable if Gem/pdp compiled with the needed libs. ++

Thanks for the info! BTW, if anyone has any info on how to interface IP cameras, I would love to hear more about it.
Best wishes,
Ico
