Hey guys, sorry to bother, but have you made progress closing on the date? Any idea?
I'd like to keep it agenda as soon as it's confirmed.

Hello all,
To add my point: in France, students usually start courses between the 15th of september and the 1st october. So I guess, the beginning of september is better for us.

first of all: cool, great, thank you. it's great that somebody picked it up again. also, i quite like the idea of PdCon bouncing between continents.
as for the date: in Austria, courses start at the beginning of october as well :-( so i wouldn't mind if the date could be shifted. i would go as far (even on the danger of being boohed) as to say that i personally would not mind to see the next PdCon early in 2014 (but that's mainly because my schedule is tight; i would love to see all of you again asap!)

The dates are fixed with the VIA festival, and CMU could only host PdCon in 2013 in conjunction with the VIA festival. So the question is, whether we should go ahead with first week of October 2013 in Pittsburgh even though it will conflict for a lot of European universities.

You know that first week of class is going to be worthless anyway. If you're teaching, get someone else to cover for you, re-direct your email to /dev/null, hop on a plane, and straighten things out afterwards :)
If you're generally busy, everything's a conflict. hmmm sorry 2013 is no good for me, but I'll *retire* in 2045

Golan Levin and Dan Wilcox are the people at CMU that would be the organizers. From what I've heard, they are interested in doing something, but probably a smaller version, and tied to the VIA art festival, so the dates would only be Oct 1-5:
So we should decide whether that sounds workable, or whether we should just focus all efforts on getting a full pdcon next year.

On that matter, why don't we start discussing this. What I have to ask is, how good or bad can it be that the conventions start coming yearly but smaller? Is it better to wait 2-3 years for a bigger/blastfull one?
I'm not sure about the answer.
All I can say is what I've said before. We're planing to start an yearly event here in 2012, and we could host pd in a similarly tied fashion - too early to say how big it could be either.
anyway, holding on for your thoughts before I start saying something ;)

Hi there, the silence about this is kinda worrying me. Seems to me we may pass on this year, right?
Touche.
One thing to note - PDCon has always been about opportunity, not regularity. As Max showed last time (and all the others I've been to in fact) you have to have venue, funding and time. Tie-ins with other events are often springboards for PDCon as was the case with Dan's earlier emails regarding this (bear in mind he also has a PhD to do, so it may still happen).
Also, PDCon is seen as rather niche by institutions like ICMA, and AFIAK is not considered "worthy" enough in terms of research by some academic institutions*. So prior funding is vital.
Perhaps 3 years is a good timetable? 50% more research, papers, and time. We'll see. 2 years was ambitious given the current "global economic meltdown". Perhaps we could get Morgan Cha$e, Goldman $ach$ and Barclay$ to fund us, given that they've stolen all our money. Or we could crowdfund it (unlikely? how? ideas please!).
Cheers, Ed
