An alternative to consider might be a small barebone system, where you can use a good and inexpensive PCI card like the M-Audio Delta 1010LT directly. You know, something like the MSI Hetis 915:

Thanks Frank that's an excellent idea, especially as I was hoping to (later) upgrade my laptop. Just one question: how easy is it to set up Linux (specifically Fedora if possible) to automatically login, and load up Jack and PD, for when I leave the screen and keyboard at home during gigs? And how do you tell it to shutdown???

That's all very easy to set up any way you like. If you have the laptop with you, you could login to your machine using a ssh connection and start any scripts you want. You could also let the display of the barebone run on your laptop using X-Forwarding or VNC.
Or do everything totally automated with some custom startup scripts for example located in /etc/init.d simular to the other stuff that's already started from there.
Shutting down can also be done either from a ssh-connection ("shutdown -h now") or use the power button, which on modern systems can also send a special ACPI event, which gets catched by Linux' acpi-daemon, which then initiates a proper "shutdown -h" itself.
All this is pretty standard stuff and easy to do: I guess, the majority of Linux machines running worldwide do so as servers, often without screen and keyboard.

this is an interesting point- i wonder how you come to your conclusion [and what supporting data you have]. i run several linux boxes- all of them with screens and keyboard. but i do know of several linux boxes set up as you indicate.
and supposedly, linux has been gaining as a desktop platform ...
what percentage of linux boxes run without screen and keyboard? does anyone know [or know where there is data on this] ?

No numbers, as I wrote, it's just a guess, which I dare to do from looking at the fact, that although Linux is becoming more and more popular as a desktop system, it's traditional home as a Unix-ish system is the server room (or farm).
Or it is the other way around: The Linux counter: http://counter.li.org/reports/short.php reports that 91.65% of all registered users use Linux at home and 53.10% at work (obviously some do both).
Lies, damn lies and statistics.
Anyway: a significant amount of Linux machines work in the server business, where keyboards and screens are not needed.

Does anyone have notice how is the UA-101 working on linux? I don't know yet but it seens to work just like FA-101, but how it is USB 2 I thought that it would be more friendly... A firewire card that seens interesting is Quatafire 610.... Anyone using with PD on linux? I don't know how is its current state (only needs freebob or needs another sound driver that is not ready?) Hammerfall is much expensive to me.... :( Zé
