when text on this list appears within square brackets like [f] it usually means the pd-object of the given name. (because it kind of looks like a pd-object) there are when someone types [bla( or [bla< they usually refer to a pd-message with the given content (because the message-box looks similat) note that some people use | instead of []
apart from that: yes there is a [shell] object, which lets you execute shell-scripts. it is part of the ggext-library.
