Hello,
I am trying to use my DV-Camera in Gem with my IEEE1394 device.
following modules are loaded: dv1394 19788 0 raw1394 28652 0 ohci1394 31876 1 dv1394 ieee1394 100408 4 dv1394,raw1394,ohci1394,sbp2
i have tried to make a device node by mknod -m 666 /dev/dv1394/0 171 34 and mknod -m 666 /dev/dv1394 171 34
In Kino these nodes are working. If i use pix_dv in GEM following error appears GEM: pix_dv: define DV(IEEE1394) for your OS
I'am running Kubuntu Linux(5.04) on a Laptop with one firewire port.
can anybody help me?
thanks, Christian

I've tried to use pix_video with the driver 1 message, but it don't work...
driverID (1) must not exceed 1 GEM: Start rendering pix_videoNEW: starting transfer closing video pix_texture: not using client storage
The console output is /dev/video0: No such file or directory
I thought that gem is using dv1394 to connect to firewire cameras. I've tried to create the node above with mknod -m 666 /dv/video0 c 81 0 is this right for PAL? Or have i just forgotten some messages to [pix_video] i've only sent the [driver 1( message to it.
Hallo!

Yes, I think it does.

hm ... maybe you also need a /dev/ieee1394 - I don't really remember how I did it ...
Or have i just forgotten some messages to [pix_video] i've only sent the [driver 1( message to it.
normally not - but just try ...

Hallo,
hm ... maybe you also need a /dev/ieee1394 - I don't really remember how I did it ...
So id tried to make device nodes for dv1394 and ieee1394 by mknod -m 666 /dev/dv1394 c 171 34 mknod -m 666 /dev/ieee1394/dv/host0/PAL/in c 171 34
Or have i just forgotten some messages to [pix_video] i've only sent the [driver 1( message to it.

I've tried to send many different messages to [pix_video] but it doesn't work. So, i downloaded the source from gem 0.90 and tried to read it (I'm not familiar with C/C++) and there is one thing which i have detected:
if gem is recognizing that there is dv it should write the message Âieee1394 for linuxÂ, but it doesn't
The message only appears if HAVE_DV is defined, and HAVE_DV when HAVE_LIBDV is defined but i couldn't find where HAVE_LIBDV is defined in the source, and most interesting thing why HAVE_LIBDV or rather HAVE_DV is not defined...

Hallo"
if gem is recognizing that there is dv it should write the message “ieee1394 for linux”, but it doesn't
okay, I can remember ...

you don't need to hack the code to define that, just use the configure script (look ./configure --help for all options) there should be an option for ieee1394 or dv or something like that ...

I've installed Gem with apt-get install before so i don't have to use the ./configure script before. I've tried to use it by typing
./configure --with-ieee1394
but there is something wrong with opengl
loading cache ./config.cache HEAD: /usr/include /usr/local/include ../../../GemLibs/ LIBS: ../../../GemLibs/ /usr/local/lib /usr/local/src checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu Configuring for Gem.pd_linux checking for gnu make... yes checking for c++... c++ checking whether the C++ compiler (c++ ) works... yes checking whether the C++ compiler (c++ ) is a cross-compiler... no checking whether we are using GNU C++... yes checking whether c++ accepts -g... yes checking for gcc... gcc checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... yes checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) is a cross-compiler... no checking whether we are using GNU C... yes checking whether gcc accepts -g... yes checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes checking for sh... sh checking how to run the C preprocessor... gcc -E checking for X... no checking for MMX... checking MMX found... checking for main in -lX11... no checking for main in -lXext... no checking for XF86VidModeGetAllModeLines in -lXxf86vm... no checking for sin in -lm... yes checking for main in -lz... no checking for glInitNames in -lGL... yes checking for gluLookAt in -lGLU... no checking for gluLookAt in -lMesaGLU... no incomplete OpenGL (no GLU)
What is GLU and how can i make it run? In the ./config help i didn't find anything about that.
thanks, Christian

you will need the X development (xlibs-dev) libraries
if you are running etch/sid you also need to install the libxxf86vm-dev package.

well, the README.build file says, that the prerequisites are (among others) "openGL + GLU" and it gives a link to the mesa homepage.
the first hit on http://www.google.at/search?q=opengl+glu gives me "GLU is the OpenGL Utility Library"; you have to install it (and also its dev-package).
basically, for each package that is needed by Gem you also have to install the dev-package (since you are compiling)

Hallo,
so you are on debian ?
Kubuntu.

Ok i've installed all packages which are needed by Gem but there is a Problem with dv1394.h file. The Compiler doesn't find it. So i've tried to ./configure the makefile with Âincludedir=/usr/src/linux/drivers/ieee1394 the header file is there... My Question is now: how can i reset the makefile, that the compiler knows the new directory??

ok; this is a problem due to a change in packaging of libdv-dev (after gem-0.90 was released)
there are 2 possibilities:
newer packages 2) tweak your makefiles, e.g. by editing it or using configure; you will then have to do a "make clean; make" (probably _not_ "make distclean")
the CVS-version of Gem also has a rewritten build system (now in src/ instead of src/Gnu/) which handles changes in dependencies correctly.
