It would be great if we could join forces in creating Pd packages. I am also interested in releasing installers based on the devel_0_37 and impd_0_37 branches, but I don't really want to duplicate efforts.

ok. my current projects about it include: - getting tcl / tk inside the bundle - putting all the available externals and libraries inside - packing it with any licenses, copyright notices and due credit for all authors - making several versions: one minimal (pd only, faster download) and one with everything available, compiled for g3 and g4 - writing some documentation for self-service management of the bundle contents any ideas? what are you planning? I personaly would like to eliminate the need of an installer, but I don't know it is possible with the same level of functionality of your current packages.
btw, I'm getting trouble compiling flext without altivec, have you tried ?

maybe modifying pd.tk you can point your menu to a folder inside the bundle

the point is that it should be easy to manage for your own, adding and removing binnaries.
you have to initially present an input line for flag customization...
this can be done in the "script " file

You do not need to include Tcl/Tk inside the bundle in order to achieve app-like behavior or drag-n-drop installing. AFAIK, Apple is moving towards including the Tcl/Tk frameworks in the OS, so eventually, Tcl/Tk will be there. And you can make an almost native app by making a custom Wish Shell.app. Check out Wavesurfer for a good example of this:
http://www.speech.kth.se/wavesurfer
Here's something of a howto:
http://www.ling.lu.se/persons/Johan/tcl/

That can be easily fixed by specifying the path in the Makefile var "INSTALL_PREFIX". But this again makes a fixed location, so drag-n-drop installation would only work for one folder path, unless there is a way to use relative paths. I haven't tried that.

The installer is a good platform for that. Otherwise, the docs.

I would really like to be able to compile optimized versions. This would entail coming up with a standard scheme for all externals, etc. to use for optimization. It'll a lot of work, but it would be great if we could just:
make OPT=G5 darwin_pkg (for example)

bundle contents any ideas? what are you planning?

That's what the .pdrc is for. A GUI editor for it would be nice though. LoadMyLibs does a lot of this.

I think that ~/Library/pd would be a good place for people to add the stuff they download later, but I think that all of Pd should be in one folder, /Applications/Pure Data.app for example, so that it can be dragged-n-dropped if need be. The installer is necessary to provide the UNIX/command line functionality, i.e. typing "pd" on the command line to launch, or using pdsend and pdreceive from the command line.

I think it's possible, but I'd love the possibility to throw new binaries inside as they are published

agreed. what about the .pd documents ? how do you associate them to the application and icon ?

I think that ~/Library/Pd and /Library/Pd would serve that purpose well. Then when the next 'official' release come out, you can replace /Applications/Pd.app with the one you download, and your own binaries will still be in ~/Library/Pd.

Indeed, some optimization is better than none. Currently, the optimization stuff is quite scattered, most stuff has none, a few externals have some, and a couple have a lot.

I don't remember off hand how I did this, but the double-clicker app wrapper that's in the current installer does this. I think its done with Pd.app/Content/Info.plist.

hello. now uPDated includes tcl/tk http://pure-data.iem.at/Members/gerard/uPDated
I've been playing with the dyld flags to get the Tcl and Tk libraries linked. The Wish application is also packed in and the HOME variable reset for pd to find it. I know it's a dirty hack, but it works for now.
this one is a barebones (im)pd distribution. there is also a readme file and some minor customization of pd.tk. and now you can access the help docs from the help menu.
as usual it's a work in progress, suggestions welcome.

What kind of file is it? It downloaded as just "uPDated" for me.

How did you go about putting Tcl/Tk inside of the package? I'd like to put this in the .app making Makefile.

op, its a gzipped dmg. I think the server doesn't manage well both extensions

It's in the script file. there is a dyld flag
(DYLD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH) that specifies the location of the
libraries (relative to the bundle).
regarding the wish app. I saw that pd looks first in the
$HOME/Applications directory, so I changed $HOME to inside the bundle.
As a side effect, your .pdrc must be in your new $HOME.

You probably gave it a wrong "name", which is the first field in the "File" properties tap of the Plone CMS on pure-data.org|iem.at The "name" must be a valid filename including all suffixes, otherwise downloaders run into this problem.

oh I see. it's weird because my browser downloaded it as uPDated.gz anyway I've renamed it: http://pure-data.iem.at/Members/gerard/uPDated.dmg.gz
thanks

ciao
this seems to happen 90% of the time, which makes sense as the default plone language is kinda wack. anyhow know if its easy/possible to change the text from "Name" to "Filename" so we can avoid this confusion? if noone answere i'll go dig around the plone docs and see if i can't figure it out when i get home...
