I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 15.04. One of the many many problems I experienced is that I'm no longer able to load pngs using [pix_image]. The only error I get when I try to do this is:
[pix_image]: failed to load image 'testimage.png'
Any clues as to where the problem is?
Thanks,

Not sure. Pd-l2ork always builds against the latest gem git snapshot. It is conceivable that latest git may have introduced some kind of a change or that your build did not have all the necessary libraries. On May 17, 2015 4:01 PM, "Antonio Roberts" antonio@hellocatfood.com wrote:

Gem uses a plugin system for imageloading (and other platform dependent things, like video acquisition), which means that if your system lacks a needed library, the imageloading plugin will fail to load butthe rest of Gem will still work as expected. the failed plugin will not be able to provide images, so you might end up with reduced functionality.
so the upgrade *might* have removed some libraries (or upgraded them to incompatible versions) required to load png files.
start Pd from the cmdline check for errors printed to the terminal (esp. when Gem is loaded) check for messages on the Pd-console. when you create the first [pix_image] instance, it should¹ print a line like: "Image loading support: magick". what does it tell you?

¹ at least it does so with current Gem (from git); i cannot remember how it was with 0.93
In the terminal I get:
device 1099421055: tried /dev/midi1099421055 READONLY; returned -1 device 1099421055: tried /dev/midi1099421055 READONLY; returned -1 device 2051: tried /dev/midi2051 WRITEONLY; returned -1 device 2051: tried /dev/midi2051 WRITEONLY; returned -1 open: /etc/pd/gem.conf: No such file or directory open: /home/hellocatfood/.pd/gem.conf: No such file or directory open: ./gem.conf: No such file or directory
In the pd console there's a lot of messages. I've attached a file with the output, but I did notice this:
tried /usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/pdp/pdp.pd_linux and succeeded tried /usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/Gem/gem_imageJPEG.so and succeeded tried /usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/Gem/gem_imageMAGICK.so and succeeded tried /usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/Gem/gem_imageSGI.so and succeeded tried /usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/Gem/gem_imageTIFF.so and succeeded Image loading support: SGI jpeg tiff tried /usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/Gem/pix_image-help.pd and succeeded GEM: Only using 8 color bits GEM: Direct Rendering enabled!

please try to trim down the problem to a minimal patch. in your case, that would be a patch that loads Gem (if it is not automatically loaded by your preferences, startup-scripts,...), and contains the objects [gemwin], [gemhead] and [pix_image] (properly connected), so that you can start rendering and click on a msgbox to (try to) load an image.

Attached is a very simple patch to open an image. The image I tried to load is from here http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9a/PNG_transparency_demonstr...
The error I got in the terminal was: /home/hellocatfood/Desktop/test2.png: Not a TIFF or MDI file, bad magic number 20617 (0x5089)
In the pd console: [pix_image]: failed to load image '/home/hellocatfood/Desktop/test2.png'
I tried lots of other pngs from many different sources and got the same result each time.

are you sure there is no more output generated on the terminal? esp. when the (first) [pix_image] object is created you should see output like: "dylib loading file '/usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/Gem/gem_imageMAGICK.so'"
tried /usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/Gem/gem_imageTIFF.so and succeeded Image loading support: SGI jpeg tiff
which (together with the fact that it found /usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/Gem/gem_imageMAGICK.so) means that it failed to load the imageMAGICK plugin, which explains why it does not load PNGs.
you could simply check whehter the plugin has all the available libraries installed by running
$ ldd /usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/Gem/gem_imageMAGICK.so
| grep "not found"
if it returns *anything*, you will need to install the relevant packages (if they are not installed) and/or re-compile the plugin (if the libraries provided by vivid are incompatible).

Nope, nothing
you could simply check whehter the plugin has all the available libraries installed by running
$ ldd /usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/Gem/gem_imageMAGICK.so
| grep "not found"
That returned the follwing:
libMagick++.so.5 => not found libMagickCore.so.5 => not found
I did a search in the repositories for appropriate packages and found libmagick++5 . However, when trying to install it:
Package libmagick++5 is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
E: Package 'libmagick++5' has no installation candidate
libmagick++-6.q16-5 and similar packages are installed and I'm presume these replace previous versions.
If recompiling is the only option can you give me any advice on doing this?
Thanks
Antonio

actually, the simplest solution is to isntall the Gem version that comes with vivid, and use that.
$ sudo apt-get install gem
now you only have to make Pd-extended pick that version rather than the one that is included with PdX. i *guess* that just removing the included 'Gem' folder will work:
$ cd /usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/ $ sudo mv Gem Gem.bak
i don't know whether this works with Pd-l2ork, just give it a try.

It didn't automatically find the version of Gem from the repositories so I copied it.
$ sudo cp -r /usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem/ /usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/
After that I can load pngs in pd-extended. I haven't yet tried it in pd-l2ork as I'm still having dependency issues.
Thanks for your help,
Antonio
