Also, I'm trying to install Yves' pdp_pidip package, when i try:

where are these files and folders?
when i stuffit expander decompressed the .tar.gz the following error came up: "...archive was compressed with an unknown compression method error 17535" (i tried downloading it a number of times)
the uncompressed folder contains 13 items and is 1MB on disk.
can anybody hep me with this?
Thanks,
Rob
hi,
you don't have to recompile anything in this package. just load the library with -lib pdp...
about the corrupted archive, mm, i wonder but it has been compressed with 'tar cvfz' on linux, so maybe try the command 'tar xvfz pdp_pidip_osx.tar.gz', the size should be 1864624 bytes, not 1Mb.
cheers, sevy

Yves--
I was wondering if it were possible to distribute this with the fink dependencies statically linked. Fink is really quite a bore to install. :) Really, it's quite a heavy, "greedy" (i.e., it takes over more than it needs to) system that's otherwise unnecessary for PD stuff.
Thanks, adam

AFAIK, it would be possible to use non-Fink dynamic libs with the
current PDP binaries. I use Fink, so that's the way I now how to do
this.

Thanks Yves,
I just downloaded pidip from the http://ydegoyon.free.fr/pidip.html page and its fine - the file on the http://ydegoyon.free.fr/software.html seems to be corrupted - download ended after a couple of seconds on two machines i tried.
using tar xvfz pdp_pidip_osx.tar.gz i got this far
...gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file pdp_pidip_osx/include/pdp_comm.h pdp_pidip_osx/include/pdp_compat.h pdp_pidip_osx/include/pdp_config.h pdp_pidip_osx/include/pdp_config.h.in pdp_pidip_osx/include/pdp_control.h tar: Unexpected EOF in archive tar: Unexpected EOF in archive tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
now I'm getting this:
dyld: /usr/local/bin/pd can't open library: /usr/local/lib/libMagick-5.5.6-Q16.0.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2)
I have installed ImageMagick with fink - but this libMagick is nowhere to be found... on with the search!
Thanks, Rob

hum, the problem is that these two pages embed a link to the same file, so it must be some trick in my provider's server configuration ( bad provider anyway but free as in 'free beer', i'm thinking of relocating the site ... ).

mm, fink seems to have installed a different version, which one do you have ?? 'ls /usr/local/lib/libMagick*'
in case it's wrong, i'm also afraid i won't be able to help much cause the MAC i've been working on is now 1000 kms from me.
<maybe a hint from pedro here>
cheers, sevy

there is no file libMagick in the /usr/local/lib/libMagick just a ImageMagick-5.5.7 folder - i wonder has fink installed imagemagick properly - i have only used it via the display command in XDarwin but it works...

Yves,
Which versions of ffmpeg or mpeg4ip do you require to compile the pidip which is currently in CVS? You mention needing some CVS snaphot of ffmpeg, for example, but you never tell which one...
Gentoo has available:
ffmpeg-0.4.7 ffmpeg-0.4.8 mpeg4ip-1.0
And none of them will help pidip compile!
"./configure --enable-ffmpeg" + "make" gives:
libavformat.a: No such file or directory libavcodec.a: No such file or directory
And "./configure --enable-mpeg4ip" + "make" complains that all kinds of stuff is missing, including:
libSDLmain.a libmp3utils.al libmpeg2_transport.al libavi.al *.a librtsp.a *.o
etc etc.... In fact, no file named "libavi.al", for example, even exists on my system, despite the fact that I emerged mpeg4ip already... And, I see in /usr/lib two files named libavformat and libavcodec, but without the .a extension.
I can compile pidip without the streaming objects, but I'd like to know what am I doing wrong?!?

using gentoo distfiles for such thing is not a good idea and is not handy to have access to source dir... so unmerge ffmpeg and mpeg4ip if it's on your system and go get the cvs sources (it will compile fine within gentoo, no worries)
recent cvs were working fine but sevy's recommandations are to use ffmpeg-cvs-2003-03-04.tar.gz
etc etc.... In fact, no file named "libavi.al", for example, even exists on my system, despite the fact that I emerged mpeg4ip already... And, I see in /usr/lib two files named libavformat and libavcodec, but without the .a extension.
download the "real" sources not a portage ebuild/whatever and don't forget to edit pidip config file to point to your ffmpeg source dir.

nothing but emerging things brings you sources files (sometimes patched and with alternate configurations) not directly accessible by the user. i guess that if you extract the ffmpeg gentoo package from your /usr/portage/distfiles and make pidip point to it, it would also work (in reality it won't cause the ffmpeg from portage doesn't have the stuff recquired by pidip right now)

I thought it would work ok. Hate to be a distro-dummy, tho.... [Not that Gentoo is a dummy's distro, of course!]

I'll try tomorrow, first thing.

That is precisely what I did... copied the downloaded package from the DISTFILES folder to another directory and pointed the configure script at it.

This is true. It is sorely lacking.

What are you doing tomorrow night?

hi,
yep, as aymeric said, these two streaming packages ( ffmpeg and mpeg4ip ) must be installed from sources, because pidip makes use of a lot of internal code of ffmpeg and mpeg4ip, which are not installed system-wide with 'make install'.
for ffmpeg, any cvs snapshot should be ok, even ffmpeg 0.4.8. i only recommend a special version ( http://tdegoyon.free.fr/ffmpeg-cvs-2003-03-04.tar.gz ) cause it's been proven to be stable ( but it has the drawback of not supporting recently added codecs ).
for mpeg4ip, it's been tested with mpeg4ip-1.0
