could even install Mac OS X, but that won't work as well.

for MacOS support, PureData did just like a lot of Linux and Linux+Windows apps did, they waited till MacOS became much more Linux-compatible, and that was a new big feature in MacOS 10.0 (compared to MacOS 9).

well, i have it working on xubuntu on old iMacs (the 266Mhz and 400Mhz) and it works. at least vanilla Pd

Well, i dont have tutorials, but you can install ubuntu easily and then install XFCE after that, or you can use the alternate installer and install the minimum system, and then make a $sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop. You will need to have ethernet connection to the internet to install it. You can download it from here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/lucid/release/
