have a look at the makefilename object in combination with simple messages like [read -resize $1<
(or the playlist object from yves http://ydegoyon.free.fr/software.html)

yes, but how do i tell [makefilename] that i want a random file, without really specifying its name? is that possible? more like the asterisk use in paths etc thanks l

indeed would be quite impossible with makefilename used alone. then have a look at the playlist object and proceed like this
[random 100] | [seek $1< | [playlist] | [read -resize $1<
note: the seek function acts like a modulo, so you can send numbers higher than the total number of files, it will loop.
+! aym3ric.

by the way yves (or whoever), is there a way of altering the contents displayed inside [playlist] so it doesnt show directories? i guess the answer is no, but maybe there's a workaround.. besti

well, it's another thing that could be done.
although they are not selected with the 'seek' message and i don't really see ( obviously ) why it bothers you to see them.
