how come pd dsp is set to 0 as default? i know it's not hard to do a [loadbang] [; pd dsp 1<
but, wouldn't it make sense to turn dsp on by default???

Then you'd need to do [loadbang]-[; pd dsp 0( if you don't want sound immediatly. What's the advantage of that? ;)
I prefer to have a silent Pd on startup. It might be, that sound levels in a patch are much higher than what I prefer, so I normally turn down the volume (when I've found the respective slider) then turn on dsp, then slowly turn up the volume.

I've finally learned the shortcut keys on Windows so I can switch on and off without the DSP message or the mouse. As I understand it, one of the reasons for allowing audio to be turned on and off is that there are times you don't need it, and it takes up CPU. Makes sense to me.
A flag to set DSP to 1 would be nice though. I thought there was one, but I don't see it. Should we put in a feature request?

From the command line:
pd -send "; pd dsp 1"
I use -send a quite a bit to set audio settings because the proper flags don't seem to work (always get 0 (and disabled) channels with -jack in pd-0.39-2).
I use [r pd]--[print] to see what messages the audio dialogs send, then replicate them on the command line with pd -send "; pd ...".
But having said that, I don't often want DSP activated on start-up, for the reasons that Frank mentioned.

I agree. With a premade, strictly audio app like Cakewalk or Digital Performer, it makes sense for audio to be on, but in Pd you have to build or load a program to do anything anyway. But having the option is cool.
I can't get any form of -send "; pd dsp 1" to work from the registry flags. What other messages might I put as arguments for "-send" to test it?

ive always thought the DSP turned of was proper because everyone is working with different processing powers , its easy to make a computer completely grind to a halt with large works in PD , depending on your processing power . the large number of people who use PD for visuals may not even need it on at all .
isn't it just a matter of hacking Pd's tk files to load with DSP on ?

That is the main reason JJ, when you've built a patch and made a terrible mistake so it crashes every time you load it, having dsp 0 by default seems entirely sensible. You can also disable all loadbangs and a few other things on launch to help you debug
-noloadbang -nogui -nomidi -nodac -noadc
all these have been useful to me at one time.

so, are you all saying that pd does interesting things apart from signal processing?
ok, ok, i get your point ;)
thanks for the tip claude, will try that out now.
