Hello,
I just started using pd in linux and I'm having a problem getting audio output. When I start, I see these messages:
/dev/dsp (read/write): No such file or directory (now will try write-only...) /dev/dsp (writeonly): No such file or directory /dev/dsp (readonly): No such file or directory
I do not have the /dev/dsp, however I have other audio apps such as xmms working properly. How can I correct this situation? I was under the impression that /dev/dsp is specific to oss, not alsa?
This is with an maudio audiophile 2496 pci card and kernel 2.6.4 with alsa drivers.
Thanks, Austin

Not necessarily. Pd works fine using alsa or alsa's oss emulation. This has to be set up, though. To activate OSS emulation you need to load the OSS emu module, which is called "snd-pcm-oss". It's best to set up automatic loading. How this is done differs a bit from distribution to distribution, but it is very easy to set up using "alsaconf". Just run "alsaconf" as root and follow the instructions.
You can then select with audio API to use by starting Pd with:
pd -oss pd -alsa pd -jack

Well, your pd was compiled with OSS support it seems. In the media menu you can select and switch between the available audio systems. If you don't see alsa, it is not compiled in and you need to (re)compile pd from source.
The problem you are seeing might be caused by different things. 1)The oss emulation is either not enabled (in your 2.6 kernel) or the module is not loaded. look for snd-pcm-oss in the output of lsmod. 2)you don't have the proper device nodes. In the alsa-driver sources there is a ./snddevices scripts that will create them.
Hope this helps
